Topic: The Poem “Beowulf” vs. The Movie “Beowulf”
I. Introductory Paragraph
Attention grabber:
a) There aren’t many similarities and differences between the book “Beowulf” and the movie “Beowulf”.
b) I enjoyed the poem much more than the movie.
c) The movie seems very artificial and not believable in comparison to the poem.
II. Body 1
a) One difference between the poem and the movie is that the much describe his journey in better detail.
b) Towards the end of the movie when rips out the dragons heart, then they fall off the cliff and die. That was very different from the poem.
c) In the poem Beowulf slayed the dragon with no extra drama in it.
III. Body 2
a) In the poem Beowulf is considered a heroic figure, because he protected the danes from the monsters.
b) In the movie Beowulf is portrayed as a liar. He lies about the dragon being his son and about having an affair with Grendel’s mother.
c) Also in the movie Hrothgar is accused of cheating on Wealhtheow, with grendels mom. That was never mentioned in the poem.
IV. Body 3
a) There were not many similarities between the poem “Beowulf” and the movie “Beowulf”.
b) There speech is the same in both the movie and the poem.
c) Beowulf boast about how great of a warrior and king he is.
d) Also the fight between Grendel and Beowulf is the same.
V. Conclusion
a) The poem had much greater details than the movie.
b) The poem really made you feel like you were there walking along Beowulf’s side the whole time.
c) The movie did a good job giving you good visuals to keep your interest strong.

In both the poem and movie the role of women are quite similar, both gave women somewhat of a subservient role, as they were referred to as the keepers of the mead in the poem and in the movie the women always serve the soldiers and even Wealhtheow acted as servant to the Hrothgar and Beowulf. The men were also shown as strong warriors, while the women were depicted as frail and weak, which reflects the mistaken ideas of both the Anglo-Saxon and modern societies where the men are favored. Although the role of the women were pretty similar, in the movie the women were given bigger parts in the movie. In the opening of Beowulf, a difference is seen between two characters, Hrothgar's warriors and Grendel. Hrothgar's warriors are loyal to their leader and are vow to fight boldly to the death for Hrothgar.
