Animal Farm Characterisation
A character trait that Snowball had was intelligence. Snowball was the one who wrote and thought of the seven commandments. He was also the first one who thought of the animal committees. This is seen in “He formed the Egg Production Committee for the hens, the Clean Tails League for the cows, the Wild Comrades' Re-education Committee, the Whiter Wool Movement for the sheep, and various others, besides instituting classes in reading and writing.” He knew that these committees were the best way to keep order and to easily improve life between the animals. He also knew that teaching the animals to read and write would improve their standard of living. This shows us that he really wanted a new and better life for the animals and that he was an intelligent leader. Another instance where snowball showed intelligence was just before the battle of the cowshed. Snowball had expected the farmers to attempt to recapture the farm and had taken all the necessary preparations to make it impossible for them to do so. He did so by “studying an old book of Julius Caesar’s campaigns which he had found in the farmhouse”. This shows that Snowball had planned the entire defensive operation and gave orders with much planning. His plan was perfect and very ingenious and thus shows us that he is indeed an intelligent pig.

Question 2
I feel sympathetic towards Snowball because even though he was a visionary leader, he was too happy and motivated to do his job and improve animal life that he failed to see the inevitable. Snowball was naive not to know that sooner or later Napoleon would try to take full control over the farm by chasing him out of the way. He should have imagined what Napoleon was going to use the puppies for and should have taken precautions against him. If he had done so, he would not have been chased out of the farm and could have continued to improve the animals’ standard of

He fights the humans in battle against the humans and commands them successfully. This quality makes him most suitable because he is fighting for the animals to overpower the humans. His inventiveness allows for the society of animals to prosper over the humans; the inventions allow them to build their society up. He reads and learns to make Animal Farm better, while trying to educate the other animals too. Overall, Snowball is more involved with the animals and doesn’t want to have more power than them. Napoleon on the other hand, is more of a dictator and is more concerned for himself. For example, when he overlooks the commandments for himself. He takes Snowball’s ideas and claims they are his. Also, Napoleon acts much more immature than Snowball. For instance, “then suddenly he lifted his leg, urinated over the plans, and walked out without uttering a word.” He doesn’t handle disputes maturely and his actions show this. Also, he blames Snowball for the destruction of the windmill, even though it was the storm. Snowball is the obvious candidate to govern Animal Farm and is best for protecting all the animals that reside there. Napoleon seems to be covering the farm from animalism to communism. All of the animals of Animal Farm should rally together and say, “Snowball for everyone, Napoleon for…

Arguably, another similarity and difference portraying Napoleon and Snowball are the relationships they built and ignored with their fellow animals and their views on life and leadership. Throughout the novel, Napoleon has only formed relationships with a finger full of people; including Squealer, his army of mine puppies, and the other pigs. Squealer was Napoleon's second in command, always reported back to him for any problems and praised Napoleon's work to the other animals by manipulating and giving excuses to why Napoleon is doing the certain things that are happening. This quote shoes the lies Squealer tells to cover his comrade and make him look innocent. Ever since Napoleon had stole Jessie's puppies, he used them to become his bodyguards…

The animals have heard so much about Snowball, they started making things up to be on Napoleon’s side. Things get worse when Snowball was accused of being a secret agent, “Snowball was in league with Jones from the very start! He was Jones’ secret agent, all the time” (57). Just when you think Snowball couldn’t get blamed for anything else he gets accused of being a traitor. Everyone in the farm hates him, but as soon as Squealer explains that accusations they all go insane wanting Snowball’s death. Napoleon got what he wanted all along, Snowball was one of the most hated animals, while he is being praised as the magnificent leader. After the day Snowball ran away everything changed, and could never go back to the way it was. Napoleon was in everyone’s mind, he could say anything and they will believe him that’s the reason they all detested Snowball so much. Snowball doesn’t mind any of it, at the end of the day he keeps returning to the farm to explore. Snowball is admirable because no matter how much hate he receives he keeps coming back. This reason clarifies why Snowball is my favorite character, he will never care about…

Snowball believes in the happiness of his citizens. He would always put the farm first and try to achieve everyone's needs, this is seen when he devised a plan for a windmill tower that would produce electricity and benefit everyone on the farm. Napoleon, however, is more of a demanding, overpowering pig who always gets what he wants. He gets influenced easily and always puts himself first. He believes that he is Animal Farm's destined leader and praises himself for all the things that he has done for the animals this is seen when Napoleon spreads lies and rumours, making Snowball into a symbol of the enemy within and steals snowballs idea of the windmill.…

Orwell also presents Snowball as tactical and intelligent. He says that he ‘was in charge of tactical operations’, in the battle of the cowshed which shows that he is intelligent, not only because he has planned what to do, but because he has been considered he best person to do it. Orwell later writes that ‘he talked learnedly about field-drains, silage and basic slag’ which shows that he is knowledgeable and wise and that he is bothered to look into such things. The use of technical language like ‘silage’ also makes him seem intelligent, by implying that he is advanced enough to understand these terms. This again shows similarity to Trotsky because he was the tactical general in the Russian revolution and like Snowball is for the farm, he was the military strategist for the communist party.…

1a) From the extract, we learn that Snowball is clever. That fact that he “had studied an old book of Julius Caesar's campaigns.” emphasises this. He studies the book – this shows the reader that Snowball is a lot more intelligent than he lets on because he actually taken the time to study this book – something no other animal has done. It's also discovered that he is studying Julius Caesar's campaigns – Julius Caesar was the ruler of Rome and a powerful figure in history. It's possible that Snowball takes inspiration from a ruler like Caesar. However the statement taken from the book also tells us the reader that Snowball is a sneaky character. He tells the other animals they should disregard any item that has anything to do with Jones, yet he studies from books – books about humans, created for humans. Snowball has clearly realised he has an advantage over the animals due to their lack of intelligence.…

This quote, taken from chapter 6 (page 52) of Animal Farm, is a highly significant speech throughout this chapter. This speech was presented by “the animal’s hero” Napoleon. Napoleon’s main intentions throughout this speech are directly against and offending towards Snowball. As we already know, Snowball is a wise pig that comes up with great ideas, but it seems Napoleon has grown envious of Snowball’s wonderful traits. In order to become more powerful and correct his mistakes, Napoleon uses propaganda and in a way, manipulates the other animals.…

Animal Farm by George Orwell is a novel that contains a plethora of symbolism. An example of symbolism is when the animals kick Mr.Jones off the farm. This is the symbol of the Russian revolution that began in March 8th, 1917. Another example of symbolism is when the Battle of the Cowshed started. This symbolizes the Russian Civil war, which outsetted because a few groups in Russia decided to try out communism, called the Red Army. Finally, the windmill was an example of symbolism. It controverted on whether Russia should spread communism to the rest of world. Trosky agreed on spreading communism whereas, Stalin cultivated that it was more important to work within Russia on strengthening the communist…

Throughout the story it is evident that snowball is an idealist. He is a “vivacious pig”, “more inventive” and “quicker in speech”. He has the interest of the animals at heart. He formed “animal committees” and tried to educate the animals in order to improve the farm. Some animals found it difficult to learn. Snowball devised a way in order for them to learn what was needed. He planned and fought bravely in the battle of cowshed and was even given a military decoration for his bravery. He tried to make the animals lives easier by building…

The animals will have an opposite view from the higher class of “Animalism.” Napoleon gains the minds of the animals through metaphors. Before Napoleon kicked Snowball out of Animal Farm, the whole farm looked up to Snowball, because he was smart in his words and in his ideas. Even after kicking Snowball out, the animals still could not fathom Snowball turning against them. Squealer changes their views of Snowball, telling them that he was a traitor from the very start. Snowball had knocked down their windmill, he tells them. The animals are frightened of Snowball being some kind of “invisible influence.” Because of this rhetoric device, the animals’ views on Snowball changed throughout the book. The pigs succeeded through this propaganda. Soon, Snowball was thought of as an outsider and nothing more than that.…
