Aggression is viewed by many as a negative response in sport, but theories of why aggression occurs contradict each other.
Evaluate critically theories of aggression that seek to explain why negative responses often occur in sporting situations
Use practical examples for the theories you evaluate.

Aggression is any behaviour outside the rules of the game that aims to harm an individual that is motivated to avoid such harm. Some skills appear aggressive for example, a slide tackle in football, however they are perfectly legal in the games rules so it is not seen as aggressive behaviour.
Possible negative responses relating to aggression are caused by; actual/perceived unfairness, frustration at performance, displaced aggression from other sources, pressure to win, retaliation, copying others, nature of the game, reaction to a hostile crowd, being on the losing team and previous ill-feeling (derby game).
There are 4 theories of aggression; Instinct Theory, Social Learning Theory, Frustration Aggression Hypothesis and Aggression Cue Hypothesis.
Instinct Theory (Freud) suggests that behaviour is predictable, genetically inherited and it is the Trait view of behaviour. According to this theory, we can tell which players and when they will perform aggressive acts. This says that everyone has aggression within them, it is just a continual build-up of energy that needs to be released through catharsis, for example, small lashes out at an opposition to release pressure (Lorenz). However this theory completely disregards an environmental stimulus that we know exists.
Social Learning Theory (Bandura) suggests that behaviour is learned from our environment, for example we observe behaviours through a role model, we perform the behaviour (copy) then this mode of behaviour becomes accepted through reinforcement. For example, young footballer copies Wayne Rooney and kicks out at an opposition player, then gets praise from team-mates, this behaviour is reinforced, then

    Bandura stated that aggressive behaviour is learned either through direct experience of vicarious experience. Direct experience refers to if a child is rewarded for being aggressive, that behaviour is positively reinforced and more likely o be repeated. Vicarious experience refers to when a child sees a role model behaving in a particular way and imitates the behaviour of the model. Aggression is learned through reinforcement of direct experiences and imitation of aggressive models. Bandura believed that four criteria need to be met for imitation to occur; attention to role model, then retention where the observed behaviours are memorised, then reproduction of the target behaviour, and lastly motivation where direct and vicarious reinforcements as well as punishments influence the motivation to imitate.     The social learning theory is based on operant conditioning which suggests that children learn to be aggressive by observing the behaviour of those around them, particularly the behaviour of significant others, such as parents or elder siblings.     Buss and Shackelford make it clear in their article that aggression has been occurring for thousands of years, far before the invention of video games and television, which is why they take an evolutionary psychological approach to aggression. According to evolutionary psychology “All human behavior is a product of mechanisms internal to the person, in conjunction with inputs that trigger the activation of those mechanisms” (Buss and Shackelford pg. 607).     Violence in sport has become far too commonplace. Aggressive sports such as football and hockey involve many aggressive tactics; however far too often do these aggressive tactics become overshadowed by deliberate acts of violence with the intent to cause bodily harm to an opponent. Many professional and non-profession athletes, as well as coaches, have adapted the mentality that winning is the common goal that all who participate in sport strive for and therefore feel that engaging in violent acts while competing should be permitted in achieving this goal.
