Short Story Analysis of ‘the pedestrian’ & ‘on the sidewalk bleeding’ In the stories ‘the pedestrian’ and ‘on the sidewalk bleeding’, there are in common on conflict and different on the setting. Both story are person against society conflict. ‘on the sidewalk bleeding’ is a short story by American author Evan Hunter. The Pedestrian is a though provoking story and it makes the reader consider what the future may be like and how the reader can act to change it. Mr.Mead and Andy have a common conflict of person against society. Mr.Mead is a lonely person, but he think that to be alone is better that following others. He chose out from the socity which is full of imposters. Mr.Mead likes to walk alone at night talking to houses and himself. He was alone in the work of AD2053. The street was silent and long and empty, with only his shadows as he moved. In th e short story, the pedestrian Leonard lives in a society which being different could symbolize craziness and insanity. This is a society that is very strict and it believes in unity. Mr. mead’s society people who are different are not accurate. In the story because of andy’s royal jacket, 2 couples didn’t help him also. They were about to help Andy until they realized the royal letters on his jacket. Two couple didn’t help Andy because they don’t want to get into trouble. The jacket stands for the conflicts between gangs, the conflict between Andy and himself in terms of his identity. For the difference betwwen ‘the pedestrian’ and ‘on the sidewalk bleeding on setting.In the story pedestrian , the individuality and free-thinking nature of Mead’s mind is emphasised by natural images. The simile “only his shadow moving like the shadow of a hawk” conveys both an impression of a hunter and an image of soaring freedom. The fact that “he could imagine himself upon the centre of a plain, a wintry, windless Arizona desert” highlights his individuality and the sense of emptiness that he feels in a society that...
