The Importance of Religion

Religion is a believe that relates humanity to spirituality. One of the major themes in the novel ‘Life of Pi’ is religion and the significance and importance of it is portrayed throughout the novel. In the novel ‘Life of Pi’ by Yann Martel, Martel shows the importance of religion in Pi’s life, as religion helped Pi understand the nature of animals, also helped him in his daily life and helped keep Pi from giving up on life. Yann Martel portrays the events as real and tries to convince us what we are going to read. In the author’s note, he describes that he went to India after the production of his second book was unsuccessful in Canada and was told the story of Pi when he got acquainted with Francis Adirubasamy. He then tells the story from Pi’s view after meeting up with Pi in Canada.

Religion had a great effect in Pi’s life. One of its significance importance is that religion helped Pi understand the nature of animals. Pi spent most of his time with the animals in the zoo which his father owns. He learned to admire the beauty and abilities of the animals at the same time to be aware of the danger they pose, after observing the routine methods of caring by his father’s employed workers. Pi often contrasts and compare between his religions of Hinduism, Christianity and Islam and also the nature of animals. For instance Pi uses the example of the three toed sloth, living “A peaceful, vegetarian life in perfect harmony with its environment” undisturbed by its weakness in senses of hearing, taste, touch and sight which portrays the wonders in our lives” (Martel 5). Besides, his understandings of the nature of the animals which he obtained through his practice of religion have helped keep him sane while at sea. Pi was all alone in the sea and his only companion towards the end was Richard Parker the tiger.
