Identity: the way a person constructs, interprets, and understands who they are in relation to others in their life world. Management: process of communicating, coordinating, and accomplishing actions in the pursuit of organizational objectives; process of managing relationships with stakeholders, technologies, and other artifacts both within and between organizations Managing: handling, directing, controlling, exercising skill in executive ability; acts done by a person in charge of controlling and directing the affairs of a business, institution, or agency. Manager: discharges the functions of managing (planning, controlling, coordinating, and directing); is rational Rational: systematically applies techniques that seek to achieve goals Characteristics of rational organizations:

1. Purpose, objectives, and goals
2. Sites of action, practice, and experience
3. Structural design, formal roles, and responsibilities
4. Change is normal
5. Rules are both explicit and implicit
Organizational Rules: Formal; Professional; Legal; Standards; Informal social rules Organizational Identity: refers to clear boundaries, a large degree of autonomy, and distinctive characteristics that differentiate organizations Organizational Hierarchy: layers of communication, coordination, and control; is top-down and centralized power Organizational Behavior: concerned with individual, group, and organizational-level processes and practices that inhibit or enable organizational performance; involves understanding, researching, and addressing phenomena from a multidisciplinary perspective Perception: the process of receiving, attending to, processing, storing, and using stimuli to understand and make sense Schemas: sets of cognitive constructs developed through social interactions (Person; Self; Social; Role; Script) Common errors in perception: stereotyping; self-fulfilling prophecy; halo/devil effect; attribution errors Attribution Error: fundamental attribution error; self-serving bias; cognitive dissonance Values: a set of beliefs and goals that serve as guiding principles in one’s life Personality: stable patterns of behavior and internal states of mind that help explain a person’s behavioral tendencies 1. Traits: Big Five – Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, Neuroticism 2. Socio-Cognitive: reciprocal determinism; locus of control; Bandura 3. Psychoanalytic: id, ego, superego; psychosexual development; defense mechanisms 4. Humanistic: self-actualization

Positive Psychology: the study, research, and theorizing of the psychological bases for leading the best life possible through positive thinking, feelings, and behavior 1. Applied to M&O: seeks to understand and to foster civic virtues, social responsibility, altruism, tolerance, etc. 2. Emotion/Mood: emotions are in response/expectation to an object or event; mood last longer 3. Emotional intelligence: capacity to recognize one’s own emotions and others’; Manage emotions in relationships Team: two or more people psychologically contracted together to achieve common goals, and share responsibility and accountability for outcomes 1. Team Properties: performance degree; skills & competencies; autonomy & influence; lvl of task; spatio-temporal 2. Development stages: forming; storming; norming; performing; adjourning Group: similar to a team except no psychological contract is involved; no interdependency is assumed 1. Reason: safety; belongingness; types of groups
