GIMPEL THE FOOL
With magnificent characterization and an outstanding point of view, the story "Gimpel the Fool", written by Isaac Bashevis Singer, clearly strengthens the age-old thought that repentance and good deeds will be rewarded with time. Gimpel's passionate yet innocent characterization play an important part in the story's meaning. The use of religious association and the use of forceful symbols aid the reader to choose the lesson learned in the work. Written in first person, we can easily understand the main character’s point of view. Helping the reader understand better the story using the three fictional elements: Plotting, Character, and Place or Setting.
Singer utilizes various ways to describe the character “Gimpel”. Although Gimpel appears to be a fool, he is actually a wise man and can even be referred to as a “Saint”. He is considered wise because the loves the children that are not his, he strongly believes in his religion, and is not swayed by other temptations. First of all, he does not listen to what people say about him and do to him. Most of them say he is a fool, and joke about him for their own entertainment. He is made into a victim rather a foolish character. When he introduces himself at the beginning we can feel his personality being honest. When he describes how people fooled him we perceive that it was not hard to do so. He describes how everyone would tell him a lie and he did not question it, he just believed them. "In the first place, everything is possible, as it is written in the Wisdom of the Fathers" (Singer, 2004, p. 278). Gimpel sounds very honest and straightforward, he does not intend to make a lie sound believable. He allows you to know about what he is thinking. After another example of "foolishness" Gimpel states, "I was no weakling. If I slapped someone he'd see all the way to Cracow. But I'm really not a slugger by nature. I think to myself, 'Let it pass.' So they take advantage of me" (Singer, 2004, p. 278).

It's a shirt. It's a sock. It's a glove. It's a hat. But it has other uses. Yes, far beyond that. So the Once-ler sold his first Thneed and he was in business. Here was the chance for the Once-ler and his family to be rich so he called them all up and started a business. The Once-ler built a factory and his business was in full tilt. He chopped as many Truffula Trees as he could and kept making more and more Thneeds. He expanded and used super ax hackers that could cut down four trees at once.     I'm not completely sure how I feel about this story, but I'll try my best to articulate. I empathize for Gimpel, as he is worthy of pity, but I do dislike the common misogynistic theme throughout the tale. Elka, Gimpel's wife, is subject to a specific type of mockery that differs from Gimpel's in the way that she is a woman and not “gullible” as he is said to be. I still wonder what Bashevis's message was supposed to portray; that the world is unfair perhaps? That one cannot change others' perception of themselves because certain people will believe anything they want to?     There are a variety of different conclusions that one can reach in interpreting the story of Gimpel the Fool. The story draws its roots from the deep Yiddish background of the author, Isaac Bashevis Singer, and it deals with the traditional ―fool‖ archetype dealt with so often in the culture. The very archetype is plagued with irony, as the fool is typically seen as coming out on top of all of the others in the story, making them seem as the fool rather than the ―fool‖ himself. Gimpel the Fool follows the archetype well. In some instances, the idea of this particular archetype can be frustrating, as the typical reader may want the main character to get the revenge he deserves. This is rarely the case, as in doing so, it would make the main character the fool that everyone else believes him to be.     In Charlotte Perkins Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper," the wallpaper is a symbol which represents the narrator's personality. Since the initial description of the rented mansion, eeriness is present throughout the story. "Still I will proudly declare that there is something queer about it. Else, why should it be let so cheaply? And why have stood so long untenanted?" (paragraph 3). These questions, posed by the mentally ill narrator, imply a strangeness regarding the mansion. The narrator's initial description of the wallpaper claims, "The paint and paper look as if a boys' school had used it. It is stripped off—the paper—in great patches all around the head of my bed, about as far as I can reach, and in a great place on the other side of the room low down. I never saw a worse paper in my life. One of those sprawling, flamboyant patterns committing every artistic sin." (paragraph 32). This is an unusual description for wallpaper in a mansion. The fact that it is stripped off in great patches suggests an uneven and unbalanced appearance or personality. The narrator continues, "It is dull enough to confuse the eye in following, pronounced enough constantly to irritate and provoke study, and when you follow the lame uncertain curves for a little distance they suddenly commit suicide—plunge off at outrageous angles, destroy themselves in unheard-of contradictions." (paragraph 33). Here, she describes herself through the eyes of John and her brother, both practical, logical physicians.…
