Formal Analysis Writing Assignment
Writing Assignment #1 - Formal Analysis of a Painting.
Find the art that you want to write about in an online museumclick on the link below to find a list of museums- choose a "Notable Art Museum" (at bottom of web page) not a gallery.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Art_museum

Directions:
Choose one work that particularly engages you. Take time to look at the work in detail; make a simple sketch of the work. Ask yourself: "How does the piece ‘work’? What is the artist doing? Why do I have a particular response (such as joy, fear, curiosity)?" Your response is, to a great extent, the result of the choices the artist has made in the process of creation. Keep in mind that a formal analysis is not a research paper; it is an exercise in perception and articulation. See outline below for more instructions.

*Format for all writing assignments: double-spaced, 12 point Times

New Roman, 1 inch margins, 700 words. SAVE your paper in Rich Text format.

Send me the link to the museum so I can view the work at the online museum.

Include a rough sketch of the artwork. Either photograph your sketch and attach it to your e-mail or scan it and then attach it.

All assignments must be submitted to the Safe Assign site (accessed on your class homepage under the icons Writing Assignment 1, Writing Assignment 2). You must send sketches of art and (scanned or photographed) as attachments to the class mail site.

*Please proof read your papers carefully before submitting them. Do not rely on spell-check to catch every misspelling. If you know you are weak in the spelling department have someone proofread your paper for you.

Paper outline:
Paragraph 1 – General Information In many cases, this information can be found on a label or in a gallery guidebook. There may be an artist’s statement available in the gallery. If so, indicate in your text or by a footnote or endnote to your paper where you got the information.

There are a lot of differences between expressive and analytical lines in art. Analytical lines are mathematically rigorous, precise, controlled, logical, and rational. Sol LeWitt’s Wall Drawing No. 681 is one of the examples of analytical line. (Sayre, 2010). Expressive lines are less logical, free, loose, and somewhat out of control. Vincent Van Gogh’s painting “The Starry Night” is an example of art using expressive lines. (Sayre, 2010).…
