History
After a very unsuccessful shopping trip in 1999, David Swinmurn quit his job to create Zappos.com. Swinmurn felt he needed to build something that the world lacked: an online shoe store specializing in shoes that would offer the best selection of styles, brands, sizes and colors. At this point in time, the Internet was up and coming. Swinmurn envisioned that soon a large portion of retail transactions would occur online and that customers would want to buy from a company with the best service and selection. Zappos was intended to be that retailer.
Zappos believes in offering the best customer service. To be able to perform this way, Zappos needed to control every aspect of the company. They decided to stop outsourcing their shipping

The main purpose of the Zappos website is to focus on customer service and making customers happy. Zappos offers the largest variety of shoe brands around and provides customers two-way free shipping. One of the disadvantages of Zappos is that customers cannot try on a product before purchasing. By providing free return shipping, customers are more willing to purchase online knowing that if the product does not fit properly, they can easily return it without incurring extra cost or hassle. Many other companies have been inspired by Zappos’ culture and wish to be as successful. This has created many competitors for the company. Free standing stores, offer customers to shop on site rather than waiting for their purchased item to ship. These free standing stores are a major competitor for Zappos because many customers like the idea of having the product immediately, rather than waiting. Zappos has many online shopping competitors. With the Internet, online shopping made purchasing goods incredibly convenient for customers. There are so many shopping websites out there and customers may not always choose Zappos. Zappos website has a clean layout and allows customers to navigate with ease. One advantage that Zappos has compared to competitors is that they match prices if an item goes on sale after the transaction occurs. If you order a product from Zappos.com and that item goes on sale within 10 days of your original purchase, Zappos will refund the difference. One feature that Zappos does not have on their website, that other companies do have, is a way to compare prices with other companies. Customers like to know that they are really getting the lowest prices, without this comparative feature some customers may be turned off by

    I identified quite a few core competencies within Zappos that allow them to distinguish themselves from their competitors.
