Born in November of 1883, Sojourner Truth grew up in slavery. She suffered many years of abuse in the hands of her different owners. Like many slaves, Sojourner Truth was sold and served many masters during her years as a slave. In 1826 however, truth escaped with her daughter to freedom. (Gilbert et al 25). This is because Truth was an icon in her time and continues to be. Her accomplishment are a testament to the strength of a woman. In women studies, the politics, media, society and history is explored from a women’s perspective. Looking at Sojourner Truth’s story, it is clear that she has played a big role in U.S history, politics and society. (Mabee et al 168). By exploring her role, one would find out a lot about American history especially as relates to slavery and women’s rights. This research is therefore important in exploration of women’s studies as her role touches in almost all elements which the study entails. She was active in many activities in the history of the U.S. her life story therefore accounts for a significant part of American history, not in size of course but in quality. This is proven by the actions of the current first lady Michelle Obama and secretary of state
