Virtual School Is a Good Choice
Dalton Lenzer Language Arts 6A October 24, 2010 Unit 3, Lesson 3

Virtual School is a Good Option Home school and virtual school are becoming more common. Some people think this is a bad thing, but I think it’s good. People argue that there are disadvantages and say they don’t like home school because you don’t get to have friends or the chance to get scholarships like in public school, but this isn’t true. The same rules apply in both ways of schooling. There are many advantages to going to school from home. One advantage is that some home schools or virtual schools are totally free. Instead of paying a lot of money to go to a private school, you can still get the education and safety for free. You also don’t have to worry about someone bringing a weapon to school or bullying either. Bullying is really bad in public school, but if you’re at home, you don’t have to deal with it. Another reason I am for virtual schooling is that you can work at your own pace. If you need to spend extra time on a lesson, you don’t have to worry about the teacher moving on if you don’t understand. You can get one on one teaching from your learning coach and that’s something you can’t really get in public school. You can also move ahead instead of waiting on the rest of the class if you do understand something and don’t need to spend a lot of time on it. If you ever need extra help, you can call or email your teachers any time just like if you had a question at school then you could ask your teacher. When you go to school all day at public school, you don’t get a lot of time with your family. In virtual school, you get lots of time with your family. You can plan, and go on field trips whenever you want to where you want and it’s so much fun! I also get more time for recess and lunch instead of having to rush through them to get back to class. The biggest advantage of all is not having to miss for anything hardly at all. If I don’t feel good, I can lay in bed or on the couch with the laptop and still do my work. I would never be able to do that in public school. I’d have to stay home and then have a bunch of make up work. I can also work even when the public schools close for bad weather. They’ll have to have a bad weather make up day, but I won’t get behind at all. Virtual schooling is the coolest thing ever invented. I like it so much more than I ever liked public school. I still get to have friends and the same opportunities as a public school student. I am still learning what the public schools teach, and having more fun doing it. I get to spend a lot more time with my family and I don’t ever want to go back to public school. I think everyone should consider public school if they can.

I believe the focus in Susan Garland’s paper “The ABCs of Homeschooling,” is directed more to the pro side, leading you to believe that you get more out of homeschooling than regular school. She argues that the popularity of homeschooling has grown along with the availability of online material to accommodate those looking to get an education outside of the classroom. Garland argues that homeschooling has its con sides such as: More likely to get into trouble due to less monitoring, eventually get on each other’s nerves, become socially inexperienced, and the need for proof with any and all of your studies. However, even with all the cons homeschooling presents Garland has shown how it is effective and a great benefit for those who may need…

Probably, the major benefit of a homeschool curriculum is that your child will face fewer distractions that can disturb the entire learning process of him or her. It has been seen that most of the children can concentrate easily in a home schooling program as compared to the noisy classroom. To me, home school is a waste of time. It makes children lazy because they will lack motivation since their parents are their educators. You also lose the social aspect of school. School teaches you how to become a better individual and prepares you for your future. At home school, you learn nothing about your future and the work force. Home school may be an option for some people but at the end of the day they’re taking the easy way…

I believe that if the current path of online education continues I think it might force teachers and professors out of a job. One other thing I think might happen is that virtual schooling will spill into our public system and might interfere the way children develop, especially in social situations where children need to interact with other kids to learn. If that’s the case I think that the quality of the education that a virtual school will have is far more lower than one in a classroom because there is teachers and other students helping each other out to understand the curriculum. I think communication between other students is very important because it build up friendships and makes it easier to study and collaborate with each other.…

Along with easy class scheduling, home schooling encourages students to have fun. Home schoolers should spend more time with their family. “Spending more time together increases family unity and closeness” (“Benefits” par. 2). Home schoolers also could spend more time on field trips to learn history. “We have more opportunities… we have taken trips to historic Gettysburg, Williamsburg, Jamestown, Boston, and Lexington” (“Benefits” par. 5). “We have also gone a five-week camping trip to the western United States… to see our history and geography come alive” (“Benefits” par. 5).…

There are so many forms of education that a person may receive today with two of the forms as home schooling and public education. There are some benefits to the individual of home schooling, such as being able to learn on your own time and having one-on-one instruction. Child safety is a pro for the parent as they are not having to worry about bullying in school and not having their child exposed to drugs or alcohol by their peers. There are also pros and cons of public education with the pros being the child is receiving an education from a professionally trained teacher. They are better prepared in everyday teachings that the child will receive. The curriculum is outlined for the year on what the child will be taught and what is expected to be taught to the child by way of a school board developing the curriculum. Children are also learning on how to socialize with other children and realizing on how diverse a world we have.…

Going to school online you don't have to work about getting up and getting dress or even finding something to wear. You can simply go to school in your pjs because you are in the privacy of your own home. And you don't even have to worry about being late for class. But on the other hand when attending an on campus college you have worry about all types of things like to get up and get ready for school and also worrying about things such as finding something to wear, combing your hair or making sure that you are on time for school before getting count absent. In other words going to school on campus really takes more effort and time then just simply just going to school online. But another way going to school online is better than going on campus is that there seems to be less work in class to…

As a visual learner, I naturally wanted to learn in a real classroom so I could see my instructors and classmates face to face. I believed that my motivation depended on physical presence so, in my initial search for schools, I stayed away from the online choices. However, the schools that offered the programs that interested me either only offered them online or in a blended format. Virtual learning seemed like the trend, but I wanted to be part of it only if it matched my needs and goals.…

Homeschooled students learn better because they are in an environment they are comfortable in. Homeschoolers believe the home is the safest, most secure environment in which a student can learn best. Homeschoolers learn in an atmosphere that is free from the teasing, taunting and bullying that can leave children with lifelong scars. Children who are homeschooled have time to mature emotionally, physically and academically without having to worry about facing mockery and negative peer pressure from friends. When learning at home, a student does not have to deal with peer pressure or with fitting in with the popular groups. A student can just be their own self. This gives the student the opportunity to focus on the lessons being taught and on…

There are many different views on which kind of schooling is better. Some people believe that homeschooling is the best way to educate their kids, or traditional public schools are the way to go. There are some parents that believe that paying the extra cost of private school is the best bang for the buck for their kid’s education. Home schooling has become more and more popular in that last 40 years. Back in the 1970’s no one even heard or knew what it was. In the late 70’s “there were only about 15,000 children being home schooled” (Grossman 2001) and 2007 there were around 1 million home schooled students and in the latest for 2012 there was 2 million home schooled students. In fall 2013, around 50 million students did attend public or private school. So is public/private school better or worse for your child over homeschooling them?…

It offers smaller class sizes and the ability to tailor the curriculum to the individual student. For students who are either above or below grade level this is a great advantage, because it allows them to work at their own pace. For students with ADHD and other learning disabilities, homeschooling can offer more one on one instruction with less distractions than there are in a larger classroom setting. Homeschooling generally takes less time per day than attending a public school as the student does not need to ride the bus to school, wait to use the bathroom and line up to go to lunch. Also, since students can work at their own pace (instead of everybody having the exact same amount of time for math and other subjects), students can spend less time on the subjects that they do well and more time on the subjects they struggle…
