To What Extent Was Abraham Lincoln Justified In The Civil War
Was Abraham Lincoln justified in not freeing the slaves immediately? Slave states were afraid of an anti-slavery government so they seceded from the United States. The slave states that seceded from the United States became the Confederate States of America and the United States became the Union. Lincoln entered into war to get back the slave states that seceded from the Union. This war ultimately lasted four years with the Confederate States of America losing the war, and the United States gaining back those states. The civil war ultimately helped end slavery, but there were still racial barriers. This would eventually cause the assassination of Lincoln due to the person who assassinated him believing in the Confederacy. If Abraham Lincoln …show more content…
If there be those who would not save the Union unless they could at the same time destroy slavery, I do not agree with them. My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone, I would also do that.” Lincoln is mentoring others views about slavery but says that he is willing to reunite the Union even if slaves are freed or not. Linonlcs main property is the war at hand, then he promises to do something about slavery. Some scholars might argue that Abraham Lincoln could have done something about slavery in the meantime. However, how would Arbham Lincoln do anything if his main priority is returning the seceded states in which there is a war over that conflict? The ongoing war was more of a priority than the issue of slavery due to slave states seceding from the Union. Lincoln wants to protect the Constitution, but in doing so he will tear the nation
