Theoretical Chemical Equation Of Ionic Compounds Lab Report
In this lab, theoretical chemical equations of ionic compounds were balanced by the group to determine ratios of reactants and products. The products were determined by the group through switching the cation with their anion partner. Using this information, it was determined by the group, whether the reaction should result in a solid, gas, or water based on theoretical solubility. Then several experiments testing the reaction of these ionic compounds were performed by the partners. Two ionic compounds were mixed together by the partners and the resulting reaction of whether a solid, gas, or water was then observed by them. This observation was then compared to theoretical results by the lab partners. Through these comparisons, the compounds were able to be assigned by the colleagues to each of the unknown bottles.
The fact that sulfuric acid was E was first determined by the writer. This was able to be done by him by first narrowing into the reaction which produced bubbles, and this included the compounds sodium carbonate and sulfuric acid by looking at Table 2. This correspondence to E and B was determined by the writer by looking at table 3. One obvious source was that the equations could have been balanced incorrectly or the proper precipitate could have been identified incorrectly. A way that this could have been improved was that the equations could be balanced separately by the members of the group, the precipitate could have been found out separately, and then the answers could have been compared, instead of the group members working together on the same problem at the same time.     The data gathered and calculated in the experiment accurately portrayed the way the reactions would have taken place. The chloride analysis was a little bit off from other groups due to the fact that our AgCl was in clumps, creating less surface area, thus our product took longer to burn and may not have burned correctly compared to other groups; yet there are several experimental factors that could have caused us to have different results than other groups, i.e. different measurements for samples. Our sources of error could have included eye measurement error, timing of set solutions error, measurement errors, and small calculation errors. Among other variables, the calibration of the analytical balance and spectrophotometer could have been off slightly, yet our results, like most other groups, still followed the general trend line generated by the graph using Beer’s Law. The measurement errors could have occurred due to the fact that one partner’s perspective of a measurement could be different than the others, but the lab cannot be preformed solo.     The purpose of this lab is to study some of the physical properties of two types of solids – ionic and molecular. The samples used are sodium chloride (ionic) and camphor (molecular). The physical properties studied are odour, hardness, melting point, solubility in water and solubility in 2-propanol. It is observed that some of the physical properties of sodium chloride are no odours, hard, a high melting point, soluble in water and insoluble in 2-propanol; some of the physical properties of camphor are a strong odour, soft, a low melting point, insoluble in water and soluble in 2-propanol. A few conclusions can be drawn from these observations. The particles in ionic solids are held tightly by the force of attraction between ions with opposite charge, because of this strong force of attraction of positive and negative, ionic solids tend to have no odours, a high melting point and they are hard. The particles in molecular solids are held by the van der Waals force of attraction, because of this relatively weak force of attraction, molecular solids have a strong odour, a low melting point and they are soft. Sodium chloride dissolving in only water (not in 2-propanol) and camphor dissolving in only 2-propanol (not in water) have proved that polar solids are soluble in polar liquids only, and non-polar solids are soluble in non-polar liquids only.…
