The Sun
The Sun

The sun is the largest object in the solar system. It is a middle-sized star and there are many other stars out in the universe just like it. Even though it is only a middle-sized star it is large enough to hold over 1 million Earth 's inside if it were hollow. The temperature on the sun is far too much for any living thing to bear. On the surface it is 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit and the core is a stunning 27,000,000 degrees Fahrenheit. But don 't worry we are over 90,000 million miles away, the sun could never reach us, at least not yet. The sun is a still a middle aged star and later in its life it will become a Red Giant. In this stage it will get bigger, and closer to us causing a temperature increase and most likely the end of the world as we know it, but this will not take place for quite some time. But the sun is not our enemy, if it weren 't for that big ball of burning gas there would be no life on this planet at all. We need its heat, its light, and its energy. Without these our planet would be frozen over like a big ice cube and there would be no signs or traces of life ever. In total amount the sun provides about 2 pounds of energy to us every day. Yes, that 's right only 2 pounds. The sun evaporates water from the earth 's lakes, streams, and rivers. It also heats the earth and cools the earth at the same time. Without the Earth 's atmosphere to protect us from the sun 's ultraviolet rays we would be toast. This is kind of how the greenhouse effect takes place. The greenhouse effect is when the atmosphere of the earth traps heat from the sun and lets sunlight heat plants, yet prevents much of the heat from getting out. In a similar way, the atmosphere lets sunlight through to the surface of the earth. The sunlight warms the earth, but the heat that created cannot easily pass back through the atmosphere into space. Now what is going on in the sun? When we look up we just see a bright object that makes us warm, sometimes

Isabel Wilkerson is an African American Howard University journalism graduate writer and the first black woman in the history of American Journalism to win a Pulitzer Prize. Among her notable works is the novel “The Warmth of Other Suns”. The novel The Warmth of Other Suns was about the Great Migration which occurred between the years 1915-1970 and this was the movement of approximately seven million Black people out of the Southern United States to the North, Midwest and Western states from 1916 to 1970. Blacks migrated to escape widespread racism in the South, to seek employment opportunities in industrial cities of the North, to get better education for their children, and to pursue what was widely perceived to be a more prosperous life. Wilkerson wrote this book because she wanted to report about the most under-reported story in American history. Despite the fact that the Great Migration was one of the largest internal migrations in the US, it was either not reported in-depth or not reported at all and her book addressed the omissions. Also her parents were among the 7 million people who partook in the Great Migration and that was one personal reason why she wrote The Warmth of Other Suns.…

Most people forget the role that the sun plays in our lives and they need to be reminded. SO our news team investigated the role that the sun plays in our lives. To start our investigation we researched all the things that the sun provides us with and the results were surprising. We found that the first effect of the sun going out would be that be the earth would be very dark and the temperature would quickly drop. In other words our climate would be a lot cooler. Another effect of the sun disappearing would be that we would be instantly be thrown out of orbit and fly off into space because of the lack of gravity holding it in place. As we would fly off into space the temperature would also drop dramatically yet again and the moon would disappear.…

The sun also provides heat for Earth. This keeps it from freezing. It would be hard to live if everything was frozen over. If it were not for the sun, the entire world would look like the North and South poles made up of ice and snow. There is some life at the South Pole, but the poles receive some sunlight. If they received zero sunlight, they would be even colder, and no life would survive.…

    The Secrets of the Sun

The sun is classified as a yellow dwarf, because of both its color and size. The sun is the only star in our solar system, and all of the planets revolve around it. The mass of the sun is equal to about one million earths. It can cause solar storms that interrupt much of our technology and means of communication. The amount of radiation that can reach Earth during a solar storm is particularly easy to reach on the north and south poles. It is because of this that some scientists worry that airplane passengers may be exposed to levels of radiation equal to roughly 100 x-rays while flying over the north and south pole. Sunspots are active regions on the sun that rotate around the sun. Solar storms are particularly dangerous when sunspots are facing towards Earth. Solar storms cause the aurora, which is driven by the magnetic field and energy from the sun. Elements are excited in our atmosphere, causing the elements to glow; this is similar to the way neon signs work. The strength of the aurora depends on the power of the ejecting sunspot, as well as the location that sunspot hits. Sunspots can reach earth in less than a day. The perfect solar storm, in today’s world could be crippling. Modern technologies would most likely not survive. This could effectively cause the failure of society as we know it, since we are particularly dependent on information gathered from satellites and other forms of technology, specifically technology used to predict the weather, or some other planetary event. In essence, a perfect solar storm would reduce the human race (as a majority) to “sitting ducks. The sun reverses polarities about every 11 years. During this time, solar maximums are achieved at the end of the eleven year cycle, while, during the duration of the eleven year period, a solar minimum is reached. On average, when the sun is at a solar minimum it is considered to be quiet, (such as the quiet before the storm)…

Solar radiation is an energy resource many times larger than mankind’s energy needs. Mankind has been able to capture/harness this energy resource, but only on a limited scale. Mankind has found that the use of the sun was quite useful. They used it to grow and dry crops, dry clothing, produce heat, and for light. The sun is a sphere, on the inside of the sun there is a continuous process of fusion in which hydrogen nuclei combine to from helium nuclei. There is less helium than that of hydrogen, which allows the sun to create energy. The energy is then radiated out of the surface of the sun, in which only a small portion is intercepted by plant earth. Just outside of the earth’s atmosphere, approximately 93 million miles from the sun, has the intensity of radiation of about 1.36 kilowatts per square foot. This process is also called the Solar Constant.…

Global warming is when the earth heats up (the temperature rises). It happens when greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, water vapor, nitrous oxide, and methane) trap heat and light from the sun in the earth’s atmosphere, which increases the temperature. This hurts many people, animals, and plants. Many cannot take the change, so they die.…

It’s crazy to think that the big ball of fire that we looked at through a telescope in the beginning of the semester used to be nothing more than a cloud of gas and dust. I mean this is the center of our universe and greatest source of energy we are talking about and it was just basically a bunch of tiny particles floating in space trying to find their place in the universe. It wasn’t till gravity hit that these particles started fusing together. As a result a star was born and began to rotate giving off light and heat becoming what is now known as the sun. Many stories have risen from the sun which is what is going to be discussed in this essay.…
