The Poem 'Charge Of The Light Brigade'
The poem “Charge of the Light Brigade” starts off with 600 soldiers on horses charge into battle in the “valley of death”. They march about half a league which is around one and a half mile to the battlefield. The poem depicts a scene of soldiers charging into the valley of death. Someone yells “forward, the light brigade! Charge For the guns!” which is the general commanding his troops into the valley of death. The second stanza starts off with saying that there was no one scared even though they were risking their lives. It continues to say that nobody knew but someone had blundered. Someone had messed up, their commander had made a drastic mistake. The soldiers obeyed the commander because it isn’t their job to command the army, their job …show more content…
The third stanza also shows that the cannons “Volley'd and thunder'd; Storm'd at with shot and shell,” they were firing the cannons at the enemy on the other side of the valley of death. “Boldly they rode and well,Into the jaws of Death,Into the mouth of Hell Rode the six hundred.” This means the soldiers are being brave even though they knew their death is coming, hence “into the jaws of death, into the mouth of Hell Rode the six hundred.” The soldier knew that they were going to die but they did not stop because they had courage. The fourth stanza first says “Flash'd all their sabres bare, Flash'd as they turn'd in air” which means that they are striking their enemy with their swords. The poem continues to say “while all the world wondered the soldiers plunged into the battery smoke thro’ the line they broke.” It’s almost as the world stopped for a second while the soldiers were fighting for their lives. The 600 rode through the enemy line of the Cossacks and Russians. It then tells how they march back but they “not six hundred” anymore. This means that most of them died in the …show more content…
They are receiving the enemies fire instead of sending it this time. What's left of the 600 are caught in a trap because their commander blundered and did not recognize it. It continues to say that “while horse and hero fell” which means the soldiers and horses are dying from the enemy shots. They came through the valley of death, and back through the mouth of hell, what was left of the 600. The 600 prevailed through the valley of death in a heroic battle. The last stanza tells of the bravery of the 600. It states “When can their glory fade? O the wild charge they made!”
This shows the bravery of the 600 and how they made a wild charge with little to no chances of success. The last part of the poem says “ All the world wondered Honor the charge they made, Honor the Light Brigade, Noble six hundred.” This commemorates the honor and bravery of the 600 and how they obeyed orders until the very end. This poem is a great way of honoring the soldiers in the battle and the bravery of the 600. The poet expresses that the soldiers showed courage even when it meant their lives. We think this poem is a great example of showing the bravery of the soldiers that never doubted their leader and showed him respect. We also think that when you blunder there will always be a way for you to comeback

The beginning of the poem starts out very depressing, the soldier talks as if they are old men on their death beds. ""Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge"(2), this line implies how miserable the soldier 's are, their sick, weak, and enduring unbearable conditions. They are walking toward their camp, which the poem tells us is quite a distance away. But they are so tired they are sleeping as they walk toward the camp. These men don 't even have sufficient clothing, some have lost their boots and most are covered in blood. "Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots / Of tried, outstripped Five-Nines that dropped behind"(6-7). This line tells us that these men are so exhausted they have become numb to the war and blood-shed around them. The soldier 's have become numb to the 5.9 inch caliber shells flying by their heads, the bombs bursting behind them, and their fallen comrades body 's lying next to them.…

Charge of the light brigade is about a famous battle which was called the Crimean war and during the war, the British, French and Turkey armies were fighting against the Russians over control of the Dardanelles. The poet wrote the poet to memorialize a suicidal charge by light cavalry over open terrain by British forces. Tennyson wanted to show how brave the British soldiers were. His job was to keep people thinking that war is good. He recounts on the story of a brave but suicidal charge by the light brigade. Lord Cordigan led 673 cavalry men in an attack on a valley. In minutes 247 men were either killed or injured. The charge became known for its recklessness. This shows the soldier’s experience because after the reckless charge the soldiers must have been horrified to witness their friends die whilst charging at the enemy, it shows the…

Tennyson reflects on conflict within the poem when discussing the subject of war, where someone had “Blunder’d” impending doom upon many soldiers. The original charge of the light brigade took place in the Crimean War. The poem describes a disastrous battle between the British and cavalry and Russian force. Instead of retaking guns, the commanding officer imperatively commanded “Forward, the Light Brigade! Charge for the guns” this command sent the cavalry, only armed with swords, and into battle with the Cossack’s, armed with guns, practically defenceless against their enemies. The soldiers very obedient, and with their sense of duty- Don’t question their command officer.…

On the other hand, “The Charge of the Light Brigade” uses metaphors such as “Valley of Death” to present conflict. This phrase forebodes the charge as it makes it sound certain that the soldiers are going to die. It also suggests the commander has made a mistake as he has sent them into the ‘valley of death’. This makes the soldiers more courageous as they are marching into their own deaths. It also creates the allusion to psalm, where faith instils courage in the face of death.…

The two poems “The Charge of the Light Brigade” and “Vitae Lampada” are both from the 19th century; they are also both based on war. Lord Tennyson’s “The Charge of the Light brigade” tends to be more specific whereas Henry Newbolt’s “Vitae Lampada” doesn’t actually give information as to where or when the combat incident he wrote about on occurred. But, ideally, the two poems are both hugely patriotic and both express a traditional respect for bravery, honour, glory and for the their nation or “Patria”…

Both poets use imagery in order for their thoughts and feelings to be portrayed; this shows what the leaders did to the soldiers during the war. In The Charge of the Light Brigade Alfred Tennyson personifies death and hell into some sort of monsters that the soldiers can’t escape from because they had ‘jaws of death’ and a ‘mouth of hell’. This shows the reader that the soldiers were seen as not having a chance from the very start and that maybe they were pushed into serving for their country by their s called leaders because they felt as though they needed to do what they thought was right when really it wasn’t right at all. Both the words ‘death’ and ‘hell’ bring emotions to the readers that are unnatural and not expected, it shows us that the poet wanted the reader to see what war does to a person and that the only option is death which shows that not much thought goes into how loved one and families will cope after the tragedy’s because the leaders failed to think about anybody else but them concluding in them putting their selves before others letting them get hurt. we also see that Alfred Tennyson wanted to show the reader what these heroes went through and what they had to suffered each and everyday due to their leaders telling them to go forward and fight, he does this by describing how…

In the first stanza, the first two lines of the poem are, “Bent double, like old beggars under sacks/Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge”. This represents the men bent over carrying their belongings through the mud. They are being compared to as old beggars & hags, (miserable ugly old women). However, these men were young. In the third and forth lines, “Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs/And towards our distant rest began to trudge”, represents the tired soldiers heading back to camp. In the fifth and six lines, “Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots/But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;” this shows how tired the men were as if they were marching in their sleep. Many have lost their boots and their feet are bleeding. In the seventh and eighth line, “Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots/Of tired, outstripped Five-Nines that dropped behind.” This shows that the soldiers are so tired and can’t get away from the explosives that are falling behind them.…

The government tried conscriptions, which backfired on them greatly. Protests started and the people were standing up against the war. The battles may have been fought by soldiers, but the war was played by politicians. This war showed that it didn’t bring disgrace to your family if you didn’t fight, but rather showed your ability to keep up what the politicians were spouting; and in some cases if you went to war people would disrespect you for that choice. The history behind these two poems are overwhelmed with war and all its horrors.…

The writer is usually trying to express an emotion or a phrase. Just like in Robert Frost's poem "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" he repeats the last line "and miles to go before I sleep, and miles to go before I sleep" to stress the extent of his journey and his exhaustion. In "the charge of the light brigade" repetition was most likely used to honor the men who died. By repeatedly stressing the number of men who fought and died for what they believe in they stress that they will not be easily forgotten.…
