The American society is the Iceberg of self-improvement in the middle class. In the end of the nineteenth century, the rise of consumer society had grown. With the consumption of mass produced goods was depended on by the growth of industries and growing cities (Faragher, 2009).
The middle class was made of engineers, managers, clerks, and technicians for big businesses. The wealthy business owners and politicians made up the upper class that lived this lavish lifestyle. The middle class was not nearly as wealthy as the upper class but wealthy enough to afford to live in nice suburbs outside of the cities.     As Ewen begins by describing the two contrasting perspectives of social reality. “It described factory industrialism as producing the accoutrements of a democracy, one which invites every man to enhance his own comfort and status. Equating democracy with consumption” (Ewen 187). Ewen recognizes that “Mass production, according to this outlook was investing individuals with tools of identity, marks of their personhood” (Ewen 187). One side of the perception of social reality is production. Being able to identify oneself with the help of mass production could be a way for people to deal with the identity crisis described earlier in his essay. Ewen then goes into the second perception of social reality. “For those laboring in many of the factories, however, industrial conditions systematically trampled upon their individuality and personhood” (Ewen 187). Industrialization did not create a way for people to deal with the identity crisis in the industrial revolution; it created even bigger problems of identity. Ewen then illustrates that out of the two ways to look at the new social reality came two ways to differentiate status and class. “One way of comprehending class focused on the social relations of power which dominated and shaped the modern, industrial mode of production” (Ewen 187). The first way to comprehend class is in terms of production in which a person’s success is defined by what they do for a living. Ewen then explains the second outlook of comprehending class. “American society gave rise to a notion of class defined almost exclusively, by patterns of consumption”(Ewen 187).     He does not just give his opinion and hope the reader will accept and agree with it. For instance, he takes facts from anthropologists and historians, quotes Karl Marx from The Communist Manifesto, and comments on Max Weber’s The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism. What makes his argument so alluring is the fact that he does not shoot down consumerism completely but views it as misunderstood and a compliment to the problem, not the cause. He does not make the reader feel selfish about feeling the need to buy things to validate where we stand in society but says that “commercialism has lessened pain”, meaning we have more pleasure in our lives compared to discomfort in our lives than most people throughout history. He goes on to discuss another work of literature, Pursuing Happiness, by Stanley Lebergott. In regard to this, he agrees that Americans buy their way to happiness.     During the Victorian Era, the formation of class distinction was advancing. The social classification was the Lower Class, Middle Class, and then the Upper Class. They were classified this way because society was reformed in such an order, that the higher aristocrats did not want to socialize with the others (Miller). Since the Industrial Revolution took place in this era, the Middle Class was formed. They were the miscellaneous individuals with varied occupations. For example, the Middle Class could contain doctors, artisans, and often servants. Most of the time though, there was not a defined Middle Class (Miller.). It was the people who were not born into power, but they were better off than the average laborer. Occasionally, the only things that separated the Middle and the Upper Class were the amount of wealth or servants a family obtained.
