Tackling the Concussion Issue Imagine that feeling when all your friends are playing football, but your parents do not let you because they are afraid of concussions. You would feel left out, right? In an ESPN survey, two thirds of the parents said they were afraid of concussions and think it is a big issue (Lavigne, 2012). Football is an awesome experience for kids on and off the field, so, why take that away from them? Parents should let their kids play football with the risk of concussions because new helmets meet the safety standards, concussions are easily treated, and football will benefit health. Wonderopolis.org says that sports, like football, have rules that do not let kids on the field for a week after suffering a concussion (Wonderopolis, 4). Concussions are not serious unless they are treated poorly so it is the parent's job too to keep their own kids safe from further brain injuries. Wonderopolis,org also says “ One thing that doctors keep an eye on, though, is multiple concussions” (Wonderopolis, 3). This is evidence saying one concussion is not serious unless kids go through multiple concussions which will not happen because parents should recognize symptoms before they go back onto the field. But actually, the NFL , back then, did not know enough about concussions so they were afraid of them ,but now officials are changing the rules just like they are in youth football. The NFL is making changes because now they have a lot of knowledge about concussions. With this knowledge, officials are making the game safer and are encouraging youth football leagues to do the same. NFL fans wanted to make a change and reduce hard hits. Recently, the league has been listening to their fans like for example, the league moved the kickoff team to start on the thirty five yard line so players were less likely to get hit hard.
