Persuasive Essay About High School Sports
Have you ever wondered if your child was benefiting from high school sports? Many people participate in high school sports. There is controversy on whether high school sports are beneficial to your child. After considering all the opinions of experts, it is now clear that high school sports are not beneficial for your children. This is due to concussions, pressure, and athletocracy. High school sports have a bad impact on your child, and in this critical time their future also.

One reason high school sports aren’t beneficial is because they create a lot of pressure. According to the video “Do Athletes Face Unnecessary Parent Pressure?” by KCRA, sports are sometimes the only way students can get into a good college and be able afford it. This puts a lot of pressure on the athletes to perform at their best 100% of the time. Experts say that your child's entire team will suffer if the parents are pressuring their kids (KCRA.com, “Do Athletes Face Unnecessary Parent Pressure?” ). This fact is important because it proves, when parents put pressure on their children it does not benefit them, in fact it is actually setting them up for life in an unhealthy way. This shows that the pressure from sports is not good and not worth it.

According to the video made by WCPO, the concussion rate has tripled in the past decade. Adding to that for students between 14-19 the emergency room visits have gone up from 7,000 a year to 22,000 every year (WCPO). This has extreme importance because concussions can cause memory loss, brain damage and depression. This proves that too many concussions could rob a child of their youth. As you can see high school sports aren’t in the best interest for you

“The Case against High School Sports,” written by Amanda Ripley in October of 2013 argues that high school sports are too competitive and demanding. She thinks that demanding sports are drawing students’ attention away from the main reason why they are in high school- academics. “High School Sports Aren’t Killing Academics,” written by Daniel H. Bowen and Colin Hitt counters Ripley’s article, and states that in their studies sports provide benefits that increase academic success. I agree with Bowen and Hitt because I played sports in high school and I earned good grades, while learning attributes that are important in life such as: discipline, organization, time management, and responsibility. As well as life attributes, I also made many great…

Organized sports have a lot of effects on children, whether they be positive or negative. Children are still finding out who they are and what the world is like. I chose this topic because I wanted to know childrens’ motives to do organized sports, and what effects the sports have on the them. I wanted to know the reasons kids start playing sports and, while it may be different for every child, they all had to have had some say in it. Every sport has skills that benefit children such as learning leadership, creating realistic goals they can achieve and learning to get along with others. Children also learn about personal discipline. “What's even more interesting is that kids derive those benefits whether or not they excel at their chosen sport” (Mary Forgione). When I first saw this quote I was really surprised over the fact that children learn these important life lessons even if they aren’t good at their sport. Ever since I had the chance, I played baseball. Why? I don’t really…

90 minutes to make or break your season. The grass under your cleats when arriving at the pitch. Wind blowing through jerseys while sprinting to get the ball. The silky feel of your school colors on your sweaty skin. The thrill achieved by that one perfect kick straight into the feet of the waiting teammate right next to the goalie's box. The skill and precision that goes into one sport that the world goes crazy for. Imagine dribbling across the length of the pitch and passing the ball, waiting for that pass back to complete the two-touch the team has been practicing endlessly. The ball is coming straight at you at break-neck speed. It’s too high to stop with your feet, what do you do? You breathe, take a look at your coach who is chewing ferociously…

Many people do not realize the importance of high school sports; let me tell a story. There were two completely different kids that went to the same high school. One of them participated in high school sports from Fall to Spring. This kid kept up with his grades and kept busy with sports and homework. The other kid did not participate in any kind of school sports. The kid who didn’t play any sports went home after school every day, so instead of playing sports or doing homework in the free time available, he had to find something else to keep busy. Having all this free time led trouble. There is no need to go into more depth in the story; the point is that people do not realize that high school sports are a crucial part of being a good student…

However, I have also met teachers, coaches, and parents who would argue that sports are beneficial to the high school student-athlete in the classroom and on the court. In fact NYU did a study on a hundred high school students and found that out of the 74 students who played sports, they had an average GPA of 3.4. 0.5 points higher than the 26 other students who did not participate in sports. Sports have proven to be a stress reliever for high school students; however, that can be untrue. Along with the responsibility of finishing your homework and studying for tests, you also have to manage your time to play sports. There have been days where my games would not start till late in the evening and not finished till late at night. These nights were always stressful because it limited my time to do homework. High school is a time for kids to learn about their future and further their education, but it is also about enjoying the last remaining years of their childhood. High school sports are a way for the students to become engaged in their school and enjoy their time there. Some people believe that when a student plays a sport in high school it affects their academics negatively. One student claims that she had to miss three or five of her Algebra II honors class because of soccer and was falling behind on the subject. To catch up, she had to go in before school, after school, and before practice to receive help from her teacher (Obermiller 1).Most coaches offer little leeway to student athletes when it pertains to their academic work. The students then tend to rush through their…
