Fifteen Years on the Bottom Rung
Have you ever thought you would immigrate into another country only to be treated unfairly? Immigrants go through a lot because Immigration has been a major issue in the United States, particularly illegal immigrants. Immigration can be characterized as the demonstration of improvement of individuals into a destination country; which intends to move to another nation where they are not conceived in, or which they are not a native of nor possess citizenship, and utilize this new nation as a permanent residence. According to DePalma "With few routes open to become legal, they remain, like Peralta, without rights, without security, and without a clear path to a better future" (115). DePalma is basically emphasizing that new settlers would come into America from spots where there were harsh circumstances and they would attempt to make the best of their lives. I agree with the author's point of that immigrants have many problems that prohibit them from their green card and Social Security Number. Depalma is surely right because as I mentioned in the previous assignment when my aunt first migrated to the U.S., she experienced the same amount of stress as they did maybe even more. She maintained as an immigrant for more than twenty years. She got married and had five kids yet she didn’t receive her SSN until recently. This is significant because if she got it earlier, she would have worked in a high paying job and earned more money.
