Reflection Paper

Social issues are matters which directly or indirectly affect many or all members of a community and are considered to be problems, controversies related to moral values, or both. I live in a peaceful neighbourhood on the northern highway and my backyard is Belama Phase 4; we do not come across any major social issues, but I believe that we do have some troubles. I assume that the burning of garbage is an issue we face. There are many times we would see and smell the burning from different vicinities, and the smoke is such a nuisance. The smoke pollutes the air and it has an effect on global warming.
The burning of garbage affects the environment by destroying the land, a factor of production. It is very unhealthy and it can cause an illness many people who inhale the smoke. Whenever we smell the smoke, my parents ensure me to lock up all windows and the door so the odour doesn’t enter, since I suffer from asthma. There is this property a few yards from my house, where there was once constant burning of garbage at night, and it bothered my family and the neighbours a lot. My mother got in contact with the owner of the premises, told him about the problem, and it ceased a couple of days later. Burning of garbage or the strong odour of smoke does not welcome visitors to the area, and it brings bad impressions upon the community.
As a community we could have a meeting with the city council to discuss the matter. We could suggest better ways to get rid of the garbage instead of burning it. Not only in my community, but in other communities in the country we could prevent the burning of garbage. Belizeans can make Belize a better, cleaner place if the action

The centers where garbage is being disposed are concealed, and not exposed to the public. The way we deal with our garbage is unhealthy; [mention groundwater]. Actually, landfills are a better alternative to garbage on our city streets. Litter-trash thrown on the street and in other improper places-is unhealthy for the public, a waste of money, a bad example for other cities, and bad for the earth.…

Gang violence has been causing problems in America since at least the latter half of the 20th century. Many cities are subject to have large gangs and this by no means is a good thing. To name a few cities New York, Los Angeles, and Detroit have been known to be grounds for all different sorts of gangs. Whether it is a biker gang such as the Hells Angels, or an African American street gang such as the Bloods or Crips, all across America we are seeing the concerns over crime rate increase while the crime and murder rate have gone down. Chicago is one of the biggest cities to have been prominent on recent increase in gang violence. Most people blame inner-city violence in Chicago on the existence of gangs. But I think that the murder rate remains high in Chicago because of the amount of illegal firearms in circulation. Thus, I hypothesize that a decrease in the number of illegal weapons will result in a decrease in the murder rate. Criminals with no prior gun experience that participate in violent gang activities have caused the murder rate to increase twenty five percent in the last year (Venkatesh, 2012).…

Most of the garbage humans produce ends up in landfills and although they have mechanisms in place to avoid contamination, it is quite possible that it will still happen because trash creates different gases and liquids such as methane, which can contaminate the underground water, soil, and air. These landfills are around the community you and your family live in and one of the short-term detriments is that it depreciates homes’ value.…

There are many things I am thankful for, one of them is the opportunity to chase my dreams and use my education, experiences, and professional practice to make a difference in the lives of others. This class marks the beginning of my path to a hopefully long and influential career in the field of social work. This course has presented opportunities and challenges to raise a level of awareness of self that I did not realize I possessed. I have and will continue to use this discernment to relate and understand others. Prior to this semester, I did not fully grasp how each of these exercises, experiences, and interactions would correlate and influence my way of thinking and attitude in life. I have learned, grown, and am proud to know that the…

People and especially women in today’s society are largely concerned with how they look, their body size, and how they are perceived by others. The problem is, however, largely associated with women than men, and has raised the debate regarding the aspects of womanhood in the society that has made eating disorder a social problem. To understand this problem, we need to consider the rising standards of beauty, which seem to emphasize on slender body. Significant fashion brands such as Vogue require their models to attain a certain size in order to model their designs, while movies and other media portray a different image of the “ideal woman”. This has…

Canadians generate about 31 million tones of garbage a year where about 80% of the municipal and industrial solid waste is disposed of by land filling processes . Recycling and resource recovery is a great way to reduce garbage but inevitably there will be solid waste that has to be dealt with. There are two possible solution; landfills and incineration. However, after researching and analyzing of both solutions, I believe that incineration has the ability to provide more advantages while protecting our environment and is the better choice when the solid waste has to be burned.…
