The sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) is a crucial factor of muscle contraction and relaxation in the body caused by inhibiting agents in the SR, known as cyclopiazonic acid and thapsigargin (Nomura & Asano, 2000). Contraction is resulted from calcium intake and release into muscles cells, distributed and controlled by the SR. (Aiello & Grassi de Gende, 1993). For example, it lacks certain luminal proteins in the ER. Although the SR has these differences from the ER, there is also a connection between the two concerning two minor proteins. These proteins were formally known as thyroid and calcium ion binding protein, however they are presently known as protein disulfide isomerase (PSI) and calreticulin. These two proteins are identified in both systems, as they are not restricted to muscle cells, but are present in a majority of nonmuscle cells. It is possible that these proteins are even present in all cells, leaving it not restricted to the SR but the ER as well (Volpe et al., 1992). The SR, while less known than the ER, remains an important subcompartment of the ER concerning calcium ions and muscle contraction. Main differences including not the system itself, but proteins contained within it. There is a great deal of information on the differences and similarities between the two to be discovered (Volpe et al., 1992).
