sebastians voodoo
Temitope Adenaike Reaction Paper to Sebastian’s Voodoo. As I watched the first few seconds of the short animation Sebastian’s Voodoo, directed by Joaquin Baldwin, I was creeped out. The film opened up with a few roughly hewn fabric voodoo dolls being hung on hooks and an unidentifiable witch doctor as the antagonist in a location that looked like a workshop. I felt uncomfortable because I thought the animation was going to be based on hard-core witchcraft. Surprisingly that was not the case. Few minutes into the short film, I was completely enthralled and captivated by this brilliant piece of animation. Baldwin’s attention to detail was part of what made this 3D animation intriguing. He used the animation technique of anthropomorphism by showing the breathing movements of the dolls. The film used a lot of imagination, emotion and drama. The short video told a complete story without missing any plots, which made the mood of the piece very mysterious and suspenseful. Till the very end of the film, I kept wondering what was going to happen next, if the witch doctor was going to spot the escaped doll or if the doll was going to successfully kill the witchdoctor. I also felt sympathy for the dolls because they looked worried and frightened. The uses of deem lightning was a major contribution to the eerie feel of the animation. It was easy to understand that the film was going to be gloomy and dark because of the low lightning. The dark silhouette of the witch doctor also contributed to the fear of the unknown. The juxtaposition of light and darkness was also emphasized. The dark lights in the beginning and the bright lights at the end enhanced the story and plot. The witchdoctor symbolized darkness and the voodoo dolls ironically, symbolized light and hope. When the witch doctor died, a bright light filled the room, which showed that good always wins against evil and the voodoo dolls had been saved.

In this analysis paper, I will be looking at the animated film “The Cameraman’s Revenge” by Ladislaw Starewicz. While the majority of animators during and before his time worked on two dimensional animated films, Starewicz stepped off the beaten path and instead chose to implement his taxidermied insects in his animations; that alone made this film unique and fascinating for me to watch. Watching the film was a surreal experience with my knowledge of how innovative this form of animation was for its time, as well as how real it surely looked to audiences back then.…

In this reading, Lisa Cartwright explores the first rotoscope animation created by the Fleischer brothers and the significance behind their labor-intensive discovery. Lisa Cartwright argues that the many bodies behind the scenes of animated features have just as much significance as the body behind the rotoscope because of Sigmund Freud’s studies on manifest destiny and the masochistic desire from labor. I find this article too wordy and repetitive to effectively get the thesis across.…

Throughout the entire film, candles were used to create the vintage feeling of the medieval time, but more importantly, lighting controls the atmosphere for every scene in the film. For instance, the scene when Alnaud went to Martin’s village as “the real Martin Guerre”, the house was lighted by candles with a warm and sweet feel. Another example would be when Alnaud and Bertrande walked on a empty field, two guy covered with straws showed up and stopped them since they recognise that Alnaud is not the real Martin Guerre. In this scene, the lighting is really dark, we can barely see the characters face. With the help of the fog, it creates a sinister feel, and also could be a foreshadowing for Alnaud and Bertrande’s ending. Yet another case happens near the end of the film just before the Alnaud’s death. Alnaud confessed to the whole village with a candle on his hand, different from the first example where candles create pleasant environment, this time candle provides a hopeless and heartbreaking atmosphere. It is very interesting that same kind of light source can also creates multiple mood depending on the progress of the…

Most noticeably, the use of dark lighting exemplifies the importance of relationships. In Edward Scissorhands, Edward was in a dark castle and was lonely until Peg takes him to her bright and lively house. The dark lighting showed Edward’s loneliness, however, the bright lighting of the town and Peg’s house showed how he was able to create a relationship with the town’s people, which he was unable to do previously in the tower. In Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Wonka did not have a good relationship with his father, so the flashbacks of his childhood are in a darker light. The dark lighting in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Edward Scissorhands stresses the importance of relationships.…

A scene that I felt was the darkest moment was when Jim and Edward were fighting. Jim was repeatedly hitting Edward in the back with some heavy metal object. When he was going to kill Edward, Kim stepped in and defended him. Once that occurred he backhanded Kim then pushed her down. Edward saw he was mistreating Kim and that filled him with rage. He stabbed Jim in the chest with his hand and and shoved him so far back he flew out the window and fell to his death. That was one scene that I thought really defined dark/spooky. I believe that costumes contribute to creating that dark mood as well in this film. For example, when Edward first came to town his pale face covered with scars and his completely black costume. It gave us a dark evil feeling and when Peg couldn’t get rid of his scars no matter what he tried it made me think he will never change. I also think that color contributes to creating a dark mood because when they first showed the town they put the bright little houses in the background then the huge dark and black castle/mansion it really stood out and gave me a strange feeling about it. Also when Edward and Jim began fighting the lighting suddenly got super dark and when we thought he was going to kill Edward it became the darkest it ever was. Suddenly when Edward killed Jim I felt the scene begin to get brighter like some weight…

What makes us feel horror in contemporary culture? What are the modern traits of monstrosity? How does aesthetic horror re-define itself in political and social terrors? We shall base our seminars on the reading of academic texts from various disciplines and of two films that re-defined the horror genre: the ultimate zombie-film The Night of the Living Dead by George Romero (1968) and Funny Games US by Michael Haneke (2007) which offers a radical critique on mediated representations of horror. Through the close reading of articles and the two films, we shall explore the many facets of horror and discover the common ‘ingredients’ of the horrifying experience in art, politics, sociology and…

In this analysis paper, I will be looking at the animated Warner Brothers short “Duck Amuck” by Chuck Jones. Jones was a well known and admired animator, producer, storyboard writer, and director for Warner Brothers Cartoon Studios, most remembered for his work with Loony Tunes and Merrie Melodies shorts. Not only this, but Jones is also recognized as the animator that developed Bugs Bunny’s personality and the personalities of many other beloved characters and made them the celebrated animated legends they are today. He also introduced the use of color smudging - a technique very useful in animating motion - while experimenting with different techniques applicable to animation. However, in “Duck Amuck”, he works more with concepts than techniques.…

This first exercise then lead us, as a group, to discuss the techniques we thought worked well in drawing emotion from the audience and how we would incorporate those feelings into our piece while using physical theatre. After our primary discussions we began to produce our own original pieces while still drawing inspiration from the same circus stimulus and basing our performance in the same ‘creepy’ genre. The first hurdle we faced was using our bodies to create believable and imaginative objects within the scene, we kept finding ourselves standing scattered over the stage holding basic poses which left the scenes falling flat and feeling inconsistent, to resolve this we began focusing all of our ideas into one to create one larger object with all of our bodies, an example of this was the cage in which an animal lived in, we used height and proxemics to create an enclosure that left the audience feeling separated from what was happening, we wanted them to view it from the outside looking in, as if they…

Figure 2 is a frame from Oldboy that evokes the clear message of ‘insanity’, shown by the expression on the characters face along with the deranged almost primitive hair. Additionally, the lighting that is used allows the scene to have a more dramatic uneasiness about it yet draws the audience in, because of the offset of the lamp and the shadows that are cast along the back wall as the light source is within the frame; this creates an increase in depth. Here Chan-Wook uses a backlight to make the wall appear and add additional texture to the scene to contrast against the subject so that his shadows won’t get lost in the darkness. The additional soft key light that is not included in the frame is used to light the subject’s face and particularly his crazed expression. Chan-Wook has mixed colour temperatures to show the confusion within the frame because the key light is not the same type of light as the backlight.…

The artist utilized oil and multiple layers of gesso on canvas to create his three dimensional piece of art. The Dancer At Pigalle’s represents a woman who dances in the spotlight on a stage. Her dress is spinning around in a circular flow. In this work, Servini is using a futurist style of painting. I have a feeling that I am inside the stage watching this woman performing ballet dancing. The canvas is developed with layers of plaster to be able to represent the dancer’s motion and dress by projecting them out into the viewer’s land. Light and environment act concurrently on the forms of movement. The work is a colorful representation of the body and the cloth of the woman as depicted. Her dress is pink and is printed with brown hearts. Her shoes are brown. She has black hair. While the painting does not reflect the real mood of the dancer, the bright colors and the gestures that the artist used on this painting reveals the happiness of this…

Tim Burton uses lighting to show fantasy and reality in his movies. In the film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory high key lighting represents fantasy. The lighting is used in Willy Wonka’s factory showing that it is every kids dream to visit it. Although it is his fantasy, Charlie knows that a fantasy is all it ever will be. To represent this low key lighting is used in Charlie’s home to show that the reality of his life is there living in poverty. This pattern continues in the cult classic Edward Scissorhands. The town that Edward is welcomed into is in high lighting to signify that it is the life that he never had. He wants to be accepted and loved and this is the place that his wish comes true. Unfortunately, we know that his fantasy is unrealistic and there is no way he can live normally. His sad life he must live is inside an empty mansion, which is shot in low lighting signifying the lonely reality of his home. Lighting gives you an idea of what is real and what is only a fantasy.…
