    Roadblocks: Poem Analysis

Many writers on their venture to becoming great, are faced with roadblocks. I too feel those stresses. When sitting down to begin a story, novel, or poem we all strive to be different. But as Baldwin explains, "there is no original thought, because we all humans think and feel has been thought and felt so many times before, by so many generations." This in itself makes starting writing a very daunting task. Not to mention the sea of fellow authors you are competing with for limited shelf space. A trip to a jam packed bookstore reiterates this feeling instantaneously. Really, what sets the writer apart is the original perspective and finding out what shape to give it to really hold the readers attention. This can all be achieved through the power in…

A lottery has always been described as a prosperous event for anybody who has ever played. However, it is not always as flourishing as it may seem. Shirley Jackson, the author of an enticing short story called The Lottery, proves this by displaying how a different culture views a lottery system much differently than your average person might think. This story is a riveting tale of a small village that plays an annual lottery game every summer by drawing names randomly out of an ancient black box. Despite its deceiving title, the ending of this novel is not what one might expect in the slightest way. In fact, the randomly chosen winner, Tessie Hutchinson, get stoned by everyone in the village. Due to the tradition of this village, this occurs…

After reading the short story The Lottery by Shirley Jackson, I think the most important theme was Traditions and Customs. In this short story, the village that the story takes place in has a tradition every year called the lottery. In this tradition, one person is picked out of the village and is given a stoning, a punishment where people take rocks and throw them at you until you die. This tradition has been going on so long that the villagers cannot remember when it started. Also in this tradition, there are some customs like a black box which is never replaced, a black dot to indicate the winner of the lottery, and the head of the family, usually the husband, picks a slip out of the black box.…

The Lottery is a short southern gothic story written in the late 1940s by Shirley Jackson. It is about a small town of around 300 normal everyday people, who because of tradition have to draw every year out of a black box for somebody to be stoned to death. In this short southern gothic story Jackson uses imagery of an everyday normal town to show the potential in ordinary people to do evil things, and also foreshadows the fatal ending.…

    The Infinite Sea Theme

    • 1143 Words
    • 5 Pages

The theme of The Infinite Sea is represented when one of the teenagers travels into the forest alone. One of the members has to leave the squad to look for a new hiding place in the forest. “I am not alone. I can’t see him or hear him, but I feel him. Every inch of my body tingled with sensation of being watched” (Yancey, 14). This would take a significant amount of courage and bravery to step alone into the forest. The theme of The Infinite Sea is also represented when Ringer and Razor are flying in a helicopter. The engines of the helicopter were turned off because they were almost out of fuel, and Razor jumped out of the helicopter. “The chopper begins to spin as it drops, and I loosen my grip on the door. I’m tossed around like a die in a Yahtzee cup, grasping at empty space, searching for a handhold.” (Yancey, 269). This means that Ringer has courage because she is willing to stay in an aircraft that is at a dead drop and then jump out right before it hits the ground. The theme of The Infinite Sea is also represented when the group is in the hotel where they are hiding. As Cassie said, “I held the metal handle for a good thirty seconds, ear pressed against the wood, but all I heard was the thumping of my heart. Slowly, I pushed down the handle, pulled the door open to create a crack just wide enough to peek through” (Yancey, 64). Whatever is on the other side of the door, Cassie is ready to take it on. This shows her bravery. The theme of The Infinite Sea is demonstrated throughout the setting, and also is demonstrated by the plot…

    the house

Grotty and ruined, the house stood grounded to the earth. I shivered as though ice had replaced my spine. The cold air enveloped my entire body. The multiple layers of clothing could not protect me against the deathly cold. The walkway leading up to the house was cracked. Weeds and dandelions poked out from these cracks. Red roses grew wildly in thick patches by the gate. The moonlight cast a ghoulish glow on the house. Vines formed a twisted maze upon the side of house, reaching their tentacles towards the roof. The house's walls showed black decay from neglect. Splotches of the original white paint hinted at the house’s former prosperity. Cobwebs covered the corners of the doors.…
