Problem: Can water float on water? Introduction: Can water float on water some say ye because ice can float but we are talking about water on top of water. The salt water and fresh will have different effects on the experiment. The experiment also see if the warmer the water is the different way it look.

Purpose: The reason that I am doing this project is to see if water can float on water and to see the water at different densities, and salinity. To see if the salt water would sit on the fresh water and how it would reaction to the effect of the experiment. Also to see if the salt water will mix with the fresh water like an estuary when the water mixes with the salt water .

Background: Different bodies of water have different amount of salt in this is called different salinities. Salinity is expressed amount of salt in 1000 grams of water. So if there 1 gram of salt in water and 1000 gram of water the salinity would be 1ppt (Part per Thousand). An estuary is when fresh water connect with salt water. Estuaries and are surrounded them are transition from land and sea.

Hypothesis: If the water can sit on top the water than that would prove that the water cannot mix because of the different types of effects.

Materials: Clear bottles (4) Sturdy Plastic Permanent marker Laminated index card
Table salt
Containers (2)
Spoon
Teaspoon spoon
Food coloring (1)
Tap water Procedure: 1. First label the bottles fresh and salt also the containers the same.
2. Make you ocean water by adding salt to the container that says salt
3. Add tap water to the fresh containers.
4. Add 5 drops of food coloring to each containers.
5. Fill both bottles completely filled with colored water.
6. Now turn the bottles upside down and observe them.

Data: 6 teaspoons of salt to the container the salt is blue the fresh red the salt water took longer to go down then the fresh the salt was more denser.

Water can float on water. The reason I put the +salt on top of the fresh was because the density of the salt would suppress the fresh allowing the two to mix, the opposite of what we wanted. So I did it vice versa.…

My name is Madison Johnson. I am in the 9th grade. I am in Mrs. Logan’s biology class. I am doing my project on “The Magic Floating Egg”. Eggs sink in normal tap water and I am testing whether or not changing the density of water will make the egg float. I was looking at projects on sciencebuddies.org and I saw that multiple people had done this. I am trying to prove that when you add a certain amount of salt to water, it will make it more dense. I took pictures of the results. This information can be useful because we can test the density of salt water versus the density of normal tap water..…

“Although the material held in solution by the water of the Gulf of Mexico is not found in combination as salts, such as produced on evaporation, but rather in the form of ions, the basic elements and the acid radicals being separated, nevertheless it is customary and convenient to consider them as combined into the form of salts. Among these, common salt, or sodium chloride, makes up the bulk of the material, being nearly 78 percent of the total mass of salt, or over 27 mille (thousand) of the salinity (which is taken as 35 in round numbers). In the accompanying table the composition of sea water salts is given in the form of such combinations, together with the permillage of each in normal seawater, and the number of short tons in a cubic mile of sea water.”…

The object does not have to be lighter than the water it just has to have a bigger ratio of empty space to mass than the water. For an object to float it has to be positively buoyant.” Buoyancy is an upward force exerted by a fluid that opposes the weight of an immersed object.” [6] When an object it positively buoyant its buoyant force is high enough to go against gravity and float. If…

Salt is what the brine shrimp need to hatch. Without salt the brine shrimp won’t be able to hatch or stay alive long. My question ‘Which water will the brine shrimp thrive the best in with with the different amounts of salinity?’ These next paragraphs are some of the information on brine shrimp. For example what they look like, eat, etc. This experiment will test whether it matters how much salinity is put in with the eggs.…

    1. What is the composition of seawater? The salinity of seawater ranges from 3.3 to 3.7%. When seawater evaporates it leaves behind sodium chloride, better known as table salt. The other components of seawater are acquired through various methods. One of which is weathering. Chemical weathering of rock releases soluble such as salts of sodium, potassium, and sulfur.…

Fresh water always freezes at 0℃, but that is not always so for water with salt inside. The higher amount of salt there is in the water, the more the freezing point decreases. So, salt water freezes later than freshwater. The exact measurement of how they impact each other is this: every 5 psu increase, the freezing point decreases by 28%.. In an ocean, there is frazil and brine. Frazil are ice crystals suspended in water, and they are made of nearly pure freshwater. Frazil is the first stages of the growth of sea ice. Brine are salt droplets. Sometime brine can get trapped in frazil. Since all salt pools together for brine and all freshwater accumulates for frazil, frazil freezes while brine doesn't (the level of freezing is much higher for brine as it has a very high level of salinity.) Sometimes, Salinity can be…

The concentration of salt in the water will have to be measured in this experiment. We will do this by titration. For this we will use a pipette, a burette and an Erlenmeyer. Before we can use these we have to clean them first by rinsing them three times with the same liquid. The burette will have to be read very precisely so all the drops in the top of the burette will be wiped off.…

Unconciously however, that must be no mistake, seeing that Water will be the theme of the experiment I will be working with.…

Just like any normal battery my salt water battery has the three main components, the electrolyte (in case you didn't know its like a liquid that conducts th electric current (I hope I spelt that right)), a cathode (the negative electrode) and the an anode (the positive electrode). As you may or may not know a chemical reaction must occur so that that chemical energy can be converted into electrical energy which is then used for whatever. In my salt water battery the electric current passes through the salt water which separates the chemical compounds also known as electrolysis. Therefore leaving us sodium, chlorine gas, hydrogen gas and oxygen gas. If you are wondering where I got this from here's how:…

    Salt Water Intrusion

    • 724 Words
    • 3 Pages

In this modern world we are faced with many different issues. Sometimes we forget that the majority of our earth is covered in oceans and freshwater. Almost two thirds of the world’s population lives within 250 miles of an ocean coastline. One of the many issues we are facing in our waters is saltwater intrusion and salinization. Saltwater intrusion and salinization is defined as the increase of chloride ion concentrations in freshwater aquifers or more simply put the movement of saline water into freshwater aquifers. When fresh water is withdrawn at a faster rate than it can be replenished, as a result the water table is drawn down. This also reduces the hydrostatic pressure. When this happens near an ocean coastal area, salt water from the ocean is pulled into the aquifer resulting in saltwater intrusion. This occurs more often along our coastlines, though there have been cases of this occurrence inland.…
