Rodriguez's Success: Diamond Grading Certificate
1. What factors do you think have contributed to Rodriguez's success? Was he merely "in the right place at the right time," or are there characteristics about him that contribute to his success?
The factors that contributed to Rodriguez's success would come from both luck being “in the right place at the right time” and a lot of other characteristics that contributed to his success. The luck happened when his friend’s girlfriend suggested he take a job at a jewellery store, which was something Oscar never considered doing before. His enthusiasm to move to America shows that he is highly motivated and an ambitious man, going to college was the first step he took that lead him to his success. After awhile being a jeweler was not enough for him. The Entrepreneur in him made him decide he no longer wanted to work for someone else. This is when he obtained his Diamond Grading certificate after graduating from college. By working at a local jewelry store, Rodriguez gained knowledge of diamonds and he used this information that he learned and the resources he had to be the middle man between diamond distributers and jewelers. Even after he was told that selling diamonds online would never work, he still worked hard and accomplished his goals with his ambition, the characteristic to never give up on things and his ability to pay close attention to detail helped him succeed.

2. How do you believe Rodriguez would score on the Big five dimensions of personality? Which ones would he score high on? Which ones might he score low on?

It seems that Oscar scores high on all five levels of the Big five dimensions of personality. He is the perfect model for the term “The Diamond personality”.
Extroversion:
Rodriguez knew how to speak to people and was very sociable. He would fall very high on this scale. He seems to be quite comfortable when dealing with other people and knows what he wants and goes after it. He has the perception of being very outgoing.
Agreeableness:

Nearly twenty years ago, I had the opportunity to meet Alex Rodriguez. He was only 19 years old at the time and still very young in his Major League Baseball career. Back then, he was an honest ball player who's goal had finally been accomplished from hard work and dedication to his craft. Over the years Rodriguez would face a number of tough life decisions that would shape his future forever. His decision to cheat destroyed his name and credibility. A vibrant young ball player who had his entire life ahead of him would later become the laughing stock of the Major Leagues.…

Education is a topic that can be explored in many ways. Education is looked at in depth by both Richard Rodriguez in his essay, “The Achievement of Desire”, and by Paulo Freire in his essay, “The “Banking Concept of Education”. After reading both essays, one can make some assumptions about different methods of education and exactly by which method Rodriguez was taught. The types of relationships Rodriguez had with his teachers, family and in life were affected by specific styles of education.Freire would interpret Rodriguez is a classic student of the banking system: as a student, to the position he takes, and as the writer of “The Achievement of Desire”…

Growing up, people realize that around the time of reaching a mature state, education has affected their personal family life in one way or the other. With that being said, in his essay, “The Achievement of Desire”, Richard Rodriguez headed towards a path where he was unconsciously distancing himself from his family and becoming much more independent than he had expected. Rodriguez gives the reader a sentimental idea of the two contrary lives he had growing up, the life he had as a child, and the life he has as an educated man. He continued believing in his aspiration of how benefits of education can remarkably outweigh the past struggles of both his family and himself. Like Rodriguez, I also, in the past, found some form of solitude in my family life, and was able to partially see myself in his story of desirable triumph.…

Richard Rodriguez’s essay “The Achievement of Desire” can be described as an autobiographical text in which the author includes some self analysis in comparison to what he describes as the only description of “myself”(Rodriguez p.547): The Uses of Literacy by Richard Hoggart. What Rodriguez is doing by writing this essay is to add further notion of the “scholarship boy syndrome” for future scholarship boys. His motif for doing this could be to make the reader reflect on the advantages and disadvantages of starting this profound experience as scholarship boy. At the end of his educational career Rodriguez makes it clear that he has suffered too much for the detachment from his family. This separation led him to miss out on a vital part of his life: family and friends. He does not want other people to experience this “loss” and his writing serves that purpose. The incorporation of Hoggart’s views shows us that besides being a good writer, Rodriguez is an excellent and tenacious reader. My personal opinion is that Rodriguez radically changed after having read The Uses of Literacy, his life goal has been to get an education and when he finally gets it he feels like he left something behind.…

While growing up Rodriguez was ashamed of his parent’s lack of knowledge, he strived to become more intelligent then they were. Rodriguez writes in his essay The Achievement of Desire, “There may be some things about him that recall his beginnings—his shabby clothes; his persistent poverty; or his dark skin—but they only make clear how far he has moved from his past. He has used education to remake himself” (Rodriguez 576). He knew that the only way to become successful was to make sure he did his best in school. He began to consume him self in books and other sorts of knowledge at a very young age. Because of…
