Richard Nixon is Good

Richard Nixon is considered to be one of the worst presidents of our time and for very good reasons. He lied under oath about knowledge of the Watergate scandal, he illegally invaded Cambodia and violated international law, and he installed wiretaps. All these actions caused him to resign from the Presidential office. What we don’t think about, is all the good he did. Nixon did a lot for our country. From foreign affairs to the environment, he accomplished much during his time as president. First of all, one of his greatest accomplishments was the détente with the Republic of China. He was the first president to visit the country, and he opened trade with China and bettered the economy by making China its biggest trade partner. He came to agreements with both China and the Soviet Union where the use of nuclear weapons would stop being used. Nixon accomplished much with our nation’s environment. He passed many acts which included the National Environmental Policy of 1969, The Environmental Protection Agency of 1970, The Clean Air Act Extension of 1970, Marine Mammal Protection of 1972, the Safe Drinking Water Act of 1974, and the Endangered Species Act of 1973. We can thank him for making our environment a better place. Besides improving our environment, President Nixon also accomplished much under Civil Rights. It is because of Nixon that women have equal pay and employment opportunities today. Nixon also worked towards racism towards African Americans and helped stop the segregation towards them in the school systems. Even though President Nixon had a lot of faults and made a lot of mistakes, he could’ve handled things a lot better. So why look at only his faults? He did a lot for our country and doesn’t deserve all the mistrust that people feel towards him. History seems only to remember the faults of people, but in the very end, he was actually a really good president

I believe that nixon should have been pardoned by Ford. The first reason I believe that he should be pardoned is because the country already had many problems. One of the problems with the country was racism which needed to be at an end or at least addressed. Another problem was the recovering of the states after vietnam and economic issues. The second reason I believe in his pardoning is Nixon already had paid a price for the crime. Many people liked him in office and he had support and he had to give it all up so it was enough punishment. The third reason I believe Ford did the right thing is because he was acting as a leader and he said that the country needed to be more merciful. I think that maybe him acting…

Herbert Hoover was a good president but he believed the economy should fix itself, many others would beg to differ, feeling like the government should handle crisis-like situations. I disagree with Hoover’s laissez-faire attitude, he should’ve helped the men that have served for this country’s freedom. Herbert Hoover was put into office at the wrong time in my opinion, I feel like his term should have been at a time when our country was at peace. Herbert honestly did nothing for the bonus marchers and caused more pain than…

Arriving to the issue of the Vietnam War, Nixon campaigned on a platform designed to reach the silent majority, the middle class along with the working class Americans. He had promised to bring us together again. Many Americans were weary after years of antiwar and civil rights protests, and were happy to finally hear of peace returning to their streets. At the time of his first term as president, Nixon's approval ratings were higher than those of President Johnson and he won reelection by one of the biggest margins in American history (Gallup). That is to say, despite the protests and ineffectiveness of his tactics, there was public support for the way in which he conducted the war, especially from the “Silent majority”. Although, this can be attributed in part to the secrecy of his actions, as was case of the bombing of Laos and Cambodia and the sabotage of the 1968 peace talks. In addition, he did effectively end the Vietnam War in 1973. For this reason in the literal sense of the word, Nixon was an effective leader, he was able to influence both American people and politicians towards a common goal, the end of the war. However, because of new information found on Nixon's tapes and in notes from his top aids it is clear that Nixon lacked the moral integrity that characterizes an effective leader. This begs the difficult question, should Nixon's leadership be judged for his accomplishment and the way he was viewed in the moment or should he be judged by the means through which he accomplished so…

While in office, he had to make some awful decisions by creating new criminal punishment systems that were practically using pillories. The worst part of his decisions is when he ordered complete destruction of some secessionist states that had been newly formed the time after the government made the decision of bugging out of the west Rookies which led to death of many American citizens. This signifies that the decision one makes may or may not been the rightful choice but throughout the novel, he is praised for being a president that was able to shoulder such a crushing burden to the nation at large. They carried a legacy although not perfect, but in the novel they portray a good example of decent…

Both presidents were accused of perjury and essentially impeached, Nixon was technically not impeached but he would have been had he not resigned. Also, both scandals included a large media presence that contributed to the public's opinion of the situations. Both of these presidents were one of the first few politicians to have their private life criticized by media. Plus, although neither presidents career matched up completely they shared similar issues. One being the Foreign policy in which both presidents became involved in conflict they should not have. Another issue being the overcoming of scandals, both men faced several scandals in their career but overcame them to have successful careers up until their downfall. Overall, both of these men went into american history as lying corrupt leaders despite their once successful…
