I. Tests for Elements Present in Organic Compound
A. Elements detected by combustion or organic compounds
1. Observation: Moisture was collected on the bottom of the beaker
a. What is the substance most likely to be? H2O (water)
b. What is the source of this substance and how was it formed?
The sources of this substance are CH4 and O2. It was formed by heating
c. What is the equation for this process?
CH4 + 2O2 CO2 + 2H2O (from LPG) (Collected at the bottom of the beaker)
d. This observation shows the presence of what element(s) in the ethanol? Hydrogen (H)
2.
a. Changes in the drop of limewater: formation of Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3)
b. Write the equation for the reaction observed. (using glass tube and LPG)
CO2(g) + Ca(OH)2(aq) CaCO3(s) + H2O(l) (combustion) (white precipitate)
3. a. Write the equation for the reaction observed. (When you blow your breath in the limewater) CO2(g) + Ca(OH)2(aq) CaCO3(s) + H2O(l) (breath) (white precipitate)
c. What substance is present in the products of the combustion of the LPG and in your breath? Carbon dioxide (CO2)
d. What does the presence of these substances indicate about elemental composition of LPG? LPG is consist of carbon (C)
e. What does presence of this substance indicate about reactions going on within your body? Our body is composed of carbon
f. Would you expect the complete combustion of all organic substances to produce a gas that would react with limewater? Why? Yes, because complete combustion of all organic substances always produce carbon dioxide which reacts with lime water. When carbon dioxide and lime water reacted it forms CaCO3, a white precipitate.
