Religion in the Workplace
When looking at religion in the workplace I found that there were two different companies, faith-friendly companies and faith focused. Every company typically falls under one or the other because no company would admit to not accepting individuals who show their faith. Faith friendly companies create a culture in which various faiths aren't just tolerated, they are valued. Faith-friendly entails considering non-Christian religious holidays when scheduling meetings, events, and training, and creating room for employees to meditate or hold small gatherings. The goal of a faith-friendly company is to recognize the centrality of faith in many employees, inclusive, and affirming of all traditions. Similarly, faith focused describes any organization or government idea or plan based on religious beliefs, specifically Christian beliefs.
Before researching religion in the work place I didn’t realize that it was such a big issue and that the consequences were so severe. The first company I researched was Chick-fil-A they were for expressing your faith in the work place. The owner and CEO Cathy was never shy when it came to expressing his Christianity in his company. They even go as far to mentioning God in their mission statement, “Glorify God by being a faithful steward of all that is entrusted to us.” The employers and employees were always doing things to show that they were open about practicing their faith. One of their most famous and well known practices is to close their establishments on Sunday for a day of rest. This was questioned and repelled against by the gay community because they felt as if the company was “anti-gay.” (William-Ross) Christians (along with many other religions) are against same sex marriage, the gay community protested and tried to nail Chick-fil-A with discrimination. I thought that this lawsuit was completely ridiculous and there was no need for it, Chick-fil- A never failed to serve or hire someone who was gay; just because of

    Imagine growing up in a home where religion is the basis for everything you do. For instance, your father is a minister which means that you are in church 5 days a week. As you are embossed in this culture, you begin to take on the traits, beliefs and practices associated with it. You are fully immersed into your religion which now becomes second nature to you. You are taught that God helps people in need and looks out for all those who worship him. As you grow older, you believe more and more that your religious practice is what gets you through. You are now an adult and finally have the opportunity to live on your own. You’ve just been hired by a fortune 500 company and you are ecstatic because, it is your belief that God is the reason you were put in that position. As you report in to your first day of work, you realize that it is all you have ever wanted and you pray to thank God for the opportunity that he has provided you. You feel a tap on the shoulder and there is your supervisor telling you that you cannot pray in the office as it is prohibited by company rules. Many of your co-workers see this and they approach you at lunch time. They all feel your pain because they too have been told that due to company policy they also could not practice their religion at work. This is a problem. You realize that growing up in a Utilitarian environment urges you to fix this problem for the greater good of all the people working in this office. Religion should be allowed in the workplace to ensure that all people are afforded the opportunity to worship as they choose, within guidelines.     In contrast to this case, there are cases where religion is favored over cooperation. In one example EEOC v. Red Robin, where Red Robin was against an employee with two tattoos of verses on his wrist. They told him that if he did not cover up his tattoos, he would not be able to serve. Red Robin argued in part that the employee had standards that the tattoos conflicted with the companies’ family image. The only evidence that Red Robin had against these tattoos was a statement saying that they “seek to represent a family-orientated and kid friendly image (Flake).” But since there was no evidence to point that the customers complained about the tattoos.     In 2007, the Rosen family filed a lawsuit against Ruby Tuesdays, Inc. for discrimination against their religious beliefs. They believed that an employee that worked in the restaurant in Athens, Ohio had intentionally burnt a swastika into the bottom of the bowl that their food was served in. They believed that the intent stemmed from one of the cooks seeing the Rosen daughter, whom wore a necklace displaying a Star of David, on the way to the bathroom.
