Priple Beam Balance
The purpose of this experiment was to learn how to use a triple beam balance, graduated cylinder, and filter liquids. When reading a priple beam balance make sure the pointer is at the centerline on the scale. If it did not stop at point zero, ask the teacher to help. Do not try to do it if the first couples times did not work out. When using the beam use the riders to measure out the substance. Start with the largest and work down to the smallest mass rider. Make sure the pointer settled at zero or singed equally. A graduated cylinder was used for measuring the volumes of the liquid. When measuring the volumes be sure to be eye level with the meniscus. Any other position when looksing at the container will cause an error in the experiment.

Students follow a water displacement procedure for volume. A fifty milliliter graduated cylinder is filled to any mark, measured by looking at the meniscus, the lowest part, of the water line. The student then takes one of the metals used in the experiment and slides the metal into the cylinder by tilting the graduated cylinder. The meniscus is measured again, before and after results are calculated.…

Volumetric glassware is used to accurately measure volumes. Despite all of the tools and instruments available for the use of measuring values of various data, it is impossible to measure the true value of anything. This experiment is intended to develop a person’s capacity to handle volumetric glassware. One must understand how to handle volumetric glassware to acquire the best possible data from the equipment used in lab. Although the instrument may measure a given sample, the value may need to be altered due to various conditions. However, with practice and experience, we can reach very close to the true value, gaining the ability to measure with both high accuracy and precision.…

When you read a scale on the side of a container with a meniscus, such as a graduated cylinder, it's important that the measurement accounts for the meniscus. Measure so that the line you are reading is even with the center of the meniscus. For water and most liquids, this is the bottom of the meniscus. For mercury, take the measurement from the top of the meniscus. In either case, you are measuring based on the center of the meniscus.…
