Question:

Richard Nixon wrote, “The great leader needs the capacity to achieve ….. Power is the opportunity to build, to create, to nudge history in a different direction” Discuss the above quotation and its relevance to acquisition and use of the traditional and managerial power bases within organisations

POWER IN ORGANISATIONS

Richard Nixon wrote, “The great leader needs the capacity to achieve.......Power is the opportunity to build, to create, to nudge history in a different direction”.

In order to appreciate the above quotation, one must understand what is meant by the word “leader”. A leader is a person who influences a group of people towards the achievement of a goal. Leadership is the manner and approach of providing direction, implementing plans, and motivating people. Building on Nixon 's quote however, power is referred to as the capacity that person A has to influence the behaviour of person B so that B acts in accordance with A 's wishes (Robbins & Judge).

Leadership and power are closely intertwined and leaders use their power as a means of attaining organisational and group goals. In order to achieve these goals, power is the means in which it can be attainted.

“Power is the ability to create......” in order to create history - a person must be able influence people so as to achieve goals. Not only that, the individual must be in a position of power to do so. Power is not really about achieving goals but merely about dependency and dependency is probably the most important aspect of power. The greater dependence person B has, person A has more 'power ' over the other.

In organisations, there will always be those that want power, have power and go to great lengths to get it. For example, an employee in the Human Resource department sees the need to have more training in lets say – Industrial Relations. The employee has to go to his/or her boss to get the approval for this training.

    To best understand leadership and power, it is helpful to understand the difference between the two terms, as they are not necessarily interchangeable—at least not from a trait-process point of view.     In an organization, the use of power comes in many shapes and forms. Hierarchical power is known to be the typical distribution of power in most organizations. For example, a business usually consists of a President, followed by a general manager, department manager and finally, the employees. Decisions occur in a hierarchical linear process, from the bosses down to the employees. Other forms of power in organizations can be more subjective. Power may not always take the typical hierarchical or down-the-ladder approach. That being said, the use of power can greatly affect desired outcomes. In a study of Midwifery students, Kantek and Gezer argue that “the use of power strategies in teacher–student relationships affects students’ learning, school experiences, motivation, accomplishment, satisfaction, future career expectations, mood, and method of handling conflict” (2010). The inappropriate use of power in an organization can result in immediate and irreparable effects. These effects can foster less than favorable work environments leading to unreceptive and unmotivated workers. Conversely, power can take a more inspirational or contagious approach. This type of power is known as referent power. Peers and coworkers alike are influenced by individuals that possess this type of power. In this paper, a case study will be presented that identifies an organizational problem highlighting the effects of power.     In the first part I want to discuss different aspects of power in organizations. “Power is defined as the ability to get someone to do something you want done or the ability to make things happen in the way you want them”. (Schermerhorn, Hunt, and Osborn). Throughout history, human beings have been fascinated by power. In the earlier periods power is prescribed by the structure of the organization. Without reference to the works of Marx (1967) and Weber (1978) it is hard to make sense of organizational power. Power is conceptualized broadly within a system-rational model of organizational structure. Decision making and concomitant exercising of power (logical, optimal and adaptive response) bring changes in the organization and we can say that ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ is an example of a movie which is unapologetically or maybe semi-apologetically fascinated with power of Miranda. Power is important within the organizations and moreover for the management to influence individuals to make things happen. ‘Power is to organization as oxygen as to breathing’ (Bernard Crick 1982). All organizations require power but all power don’t require organization. We cannot make serious enquiry in to the organization without an enquiry of power. Main conception of power is concentrated on Weber’s (1947) classic definition that “power is the probability that a person can carry out his or her own will despite resistance”. The concept of power is often expressed in the literature by the words ‘the ability to …’ as by Salancik and Pfeffer (1977) and ‘the ability to bring about outcomes you desire’ (Power politics and organizations: Andrew Kakabadse and Christopher Parker,P 22). There are four dimensions of power such as behavioural view (Dahl), political view (Bacharach and Baratz), radical structural view (Lukes) and relational approach (Foucault).
