With the students’ different background, different skills, proficiencies, and also different phase in learning, it will be good if the teachers can create their own curriculum by considering the needs of students but still based on the core curriculum determined by the government. The government had also taken a big step on the assessment system in which national examination is not anymore set as the sole standard to determine the students’ final achievement in school. However, as long as the national examination is still implemented in schools, it is hard to change people perception about the assessment system which is now depended not only from the result of the national examination. Teacher-based assessment should be more considered as the measurement of students’ proficiency in Indonesia, as teachers are the one who knows best about their students’…

The Malaysia government has started discussing about whether public examination in primary schools and secondary schools should be abolished. This issue has become hot topic among citizens in Malaysia. The purpose of this essay is to discuss the necessity of public examination. Examination can be defined as “a formal test of a person's knowledge or proficiency in a subject or skill” (Oxford Dictionary of English 2nd Edition, 2005). Many countries have their own public examination which compulsory for all students to take it to test the progress of the students in their academic performance. Public examination has different name in different countries. For example, in our country, Malaysia, we have a few type of public examination. One of the public examinations is SPM, Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia or also known as Malaysian Certificate of Education (MCE). Malaysian Certificate of Education (MCE) was claimed to be equally same with the British General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) (Esa, A et al. 2009). When the time for public examination arrives, educators and parents will work together in order to help the students to achieve the best possible result they could. This is because the government has set an achievement targets for schools to reach. Schools that achieved the above targets will be awarded as the best school in the country with the highest ratings. This will then boost the parents’ or guardians’ confidence to send their child to that school so he or she can also achieve good result.…

The National Certificate of Educational Achievement - or “NCEA” – was introduced earlier this century between 2002 and 2004. Its primary objective is to offer a standard-based, as opposed to norm-based, system for assessment. In evaluating only a student’s self-knowledge and understanding, NCEA promotes mediocrity. With no comparison to more advanced students, the system provides no incentive to excel. The Cambridge International Examinations curriculum consists of an exam at the end of the year for each course. From this exam, the applicants receive their final grade for the subject. This avoids internal work, which NCEA is largely comprised of. Internal assessment often leads to inconsistent marking and unfair biased judgment of student work. The Cambridge International Examinations curriculum, in being a largely exam-based programme, prepares students for tertiary study better than NCEA. I believe the Cambridge International Examinations will provide a more advanced structure and a far superior academically challenging course that NCEA has not successfully implemented.…

Education is an ongoing and continuous process to develop knowledge, skills, mores and norms. Napoleon Hill states that education comes from your within, you get it by struggle, effort and thought. According to the Oxford Paperback Dictionary and Thesaurus, the word examination can be defined as the process of assigned or being responsible for marking, assessing testing and evaluating capability of a candidate according to the standards set by the Ministry. Meanwhile, the term abolishment brings denotation the act of destroying completely a practice or a system. Nowadays, we could find students are studying only for their exams. Hence, the Education director General, Tan Sri Aliimuddin Md Dom said that the country¶s education system has been too exam oriented and change should be made immediately to make the National Education Philosophy is effective enough in human capital development. Thus, the government has made a proposal to the public that UPSR and PMR should be abolished and examinations are being replaced with school based assessments. As government made the proposal, many voices are heard as there are different perspectives and opinions from the public as this abolishment has both pros and cons.…

Besides, the mind of a student, even if he is dull, receives good exercise when he prepares for an examination.
