As an American I am much fortunate than most people around the world that are not given the opportunity and freedom I have. On the other hand, I am being made fun of my skin color and stereotypes that this country has created about my kind of people. Being an American may have some very negative downside, but one thing I know I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. In America, I am female Chinese American from a 2nd generation of immigrants. In China, a place I visit every other year for months at times also changed how I act as an American. China is simply a country that looks down upon America and laughing at whatever is going on in our foreign policies and especially presidential elections. This made me act like being American is just a name and nothing more, that I am just a Chinese girl living in the United States. I understood that I was born and educated in America, I do have some American aspect in my blood. Yet, countless people have treated me like a dumb Chinese girl living in a chaotic country makes me want to let go of me American citizenship. Regardless though looking at China, North Korea, Russia and a sufficient amount of countries that their citizen’s don’t get the choices I have. My political viewpoint has changed dramatically since I was first introduced to politics. I come from a democratic family, where it is strongly believed that it is the government’s responsibility to care for all people and that the government knows what is best for all people. Every voting season, my parents vote for a democratic president and explain to me the reasoning behind their decision. It was not until I was in the tenth grade that I realized that I did not hold the same political beliefs as my parents. After taking several political quizzes and extensively researching the bevy of political parties, I now know that I am an independent. What is an independent? An independent is an individual politician not affiliated to any political…

It is late evening of May 1, 2011. I am trying as patiently as I possibly can to relax in my chair. I am sitting in a heavy black-painted room in a comfortable brown chair. The chair is at the head of a long table that occupies most of the room. This room happens to be my favorite room in all of the White House. Well anyways, I am sitting in this room...alone...with nervousness circling throughout my body...along with envy...because the United States Navy Seals are currently in Pakistan capturing and killing Osama Bin Laden. I put my hand up to see just about how nervous I am. My hand appears to be shaking more than a knee bobbing up and down, side to side when they really have to go to the bathroom. I have been stressing out all day over how the operation is going to turn out.…

Over the last couple years I have been trying to reconnect with by biological identity. Conveniently, the trip I took to China came at the same time of President Trump’s inauguration. Being out of the country during that time was really helpful for me to gain perspective, after being quite disappointed in the election results. In retrospect it seems appropriate that I was questioning my identity as an American while, the definition of what it means to be an American was a large part of the political debate. Obviously immigration is a huge topic that the current President claims to be one of his…

My idea of what an American is could be considered old fashion and would probably fit better in Benjamin Franklin’s era than the current time period. Most people have heard the saying, “as American as mom, baseball and apple pie”, however, I feel that what makes a person an American is deeper and more meaningful than that. Being a true American involves pride, honor and responsibility.…

Many people come to the United States to attain their dreams and, at some point, earn the title of an American. It is a term that is thrown around often, but do we honestly know the true meaning? Recently, the entire nation has become divided over what it means to live and be a part of America. Therefore, as a writer for the Washington Post stated, “If we can’t agree on what being “American” really means, it’s going to be very hard to find common ground on anything else” (Cillizza). The term American is an abstract idea and cannot be completely defined. There are many elements to consider because everyone is different, but that is what makes America so special. Growing up as a naturalized Chinese-American has greatly shaped my personality, interests, and motivations. My parents, who fled rural China in search of a better life, never completed high school. This meant that I did not have the luxury of the guidance offered by most parents, so I became adamant to succeed where my parents had not; I became independent from an early age with a strong belief that hard-work and perseverance equate success.…

When I was 4 years old, I traveled to the Philippines with my parents, as my Dad wanted to experience working overseas at one of his organization's partners. We stayed in a city, Cabanatuan, and while my parents were working, the woman across the street babysat me. In our free time, we traveled around the country and saw many sights, including an active volcano that was steaming. One of the most fascinating parts of the trip, though, was learning about the culture. So many of the younger kids had never seen a boy with blond hair before, and women at the mall always wanted to touch my skin and hair.…
