Personal Narrative: For The Love Of Football
For The Love of the Game
Big lights hit our eyes as we exit through the tunnel to enter the football field. Running out we hear the crowd yelling. Although I played this game a thousand time my shoulder pads always feel tight when my nerves get the best of me; therefore, it lets me know I’m game ready. I start to feel butterfly’s in my stomach while I head on to the football field. Although I work all summer long for this exact moment as a freshman to be a captain and a starter on the varsity squad. I been to several of football campus around the State of Texas to build up my confidence to be an exceptional football player. As I stand there waiting impatiently for the football to be kicked I can feel my heart hammering out my chest.

The gut-wrenching screech of the whistle shook my ear drums, numbed my chest, and crippled my legs. Prior to this, Pine Richland had kicked a field goal that gave them a three point lead with only seconds left. We had one play to win: a kickoff return to hopefully save not only our season, but to justify the twelve years I had devoted to this game. As the ball was hopping down the field, I stood there trying to stop my hands from frantically shaking. After what felt like an hour, I could finally feel the pigskin leather on my fingertips. I looked up to see the other team stampeding down the field straight for my head. I had to get rid of the ball. To my right, my sweat-soaked teammates had steam rising from the top of their heads and surrounding their bodies. As I threw the ball, the blurred roar of the crowd chilled my bones. I began to run and target an enemy to hit. Inches from me, a white jersey trailed only feet behind my ball-toting teammate; I was a heat-seeking missile and my target was getting warmer. Our bones crunched as our bodies collided. His mouthpiece, accompanied by saliva and mucus, flew from his mouth as his head jerked back from the blow. It was as that white jersey whimpered in pain…

I wake up with a different feeling in my stomach knowing that its game day. Now I'm not talking about college game day, or even NFL Sundays. I’m talking about U of D Jesuit High School game day. Whether it is basketball, football, hockey, soccer, or lacrosse, all I can think about, from the moment I wake up, is leading the best student section in the state later that day. Ever since I was a 7th grader, I had always dreamed of being a section leader. When my dream finally came true senior year, I was ecstatic. Being a section leader was a key ingredient for what was going to be an amazing senior year. I love being a section leader because every time I’m out there, I know that there is a 7th grader, at the top row of the section, waiting…

It all started at ninth street with some friends of mine John and I started recruiting some people to come play football with us. I honestly didn’t know I had a pretty decent arm. I originally was going to start practicing to play wide receiver instead of quarterback. At the time Odell Beckham Jr. ( wide receiver for the New York Giants ) was extremely explosive and dynamic on offense. Seeing him blow up on offense made me want to try out for wide receiver. But somehow John convinced me to play quarterback.…

They ran out onto the field, similar in size and strength of men in their twenties, and began a simple, but loud chant of “Red Dogs” accompanied by the crowd. Beginning to have some doubt, we sent our captains out to the middle of the field for the coin toss. Even though our captains were some of the tallest biggest people on our team, they were miniature compared to the size of their four captains who towered over our captains as an adult towers over a child. This moment is when we were certain the game was a lost cause and first place was out of reach. Doubt and defeat could already be seen in the coach’s eyes; nevertheless, we lined up for the first play. Alex said “hut”, and we ran it straight up the middle—touchdown. We stood there in aw not believing what just happened and thought surely it was a fluke. Our defense stopped them, and we scored again. The final score was 35-7, and the Falcons won it. After shaking the hand of the sad giants, we received the trophy and first place ribbons; and our doubts and disbeliefs were nowhere in sight.…

Station Camp was five yards from the end zone when our defense flattened the running back, sending the football to the hands of the tackler. Our defense scored on that play to win the game 26-20 in overtime. The tumultuous crowd became so loud, we couldn't hear each other on the field; but truthfully, we did not need to speak. Who we were spoke so loudly that we did not need to hear each other. Numerous predictions claimed we should have lost that game alongside our already fearful fans. After losing nineteen talented starters in the class above us, an immense void was left to fill by few seniors. So why did we keep playing? The answer is that the visceral integrity ingrained within us would never allow us cease believing in ourselves and let adversity control the outcome of the game.…

My first goal was to complete a 200 pound bench press. I selected this goal because I wanted more power in football. My second goal was to do 75 consecutive push ups. I chose this goal because push ups are a great exercise to increase your bench press. My third goal was to get really cut and lower my body fat percentage. I increase cardio and changed to a healthier diet to achieve this goal. My fourth goal was to weight 150lbs. I chose this goal because having some extra weight will help me on the football field. I tried to make these goals reasonable and with a lot of hard work I was able to achieve 2 of them.…

It was a very pleasant evening and I was at soccer practice at the South Barrington turf soccer fields. I loved to play soccer and I took it really seriously. Everything I do I go all out. There was no such thing as a second gear for me, I would always go 110 percent. When I was on the field, I could be looked at as a violent person and I would constantly get carded for rough play. During some of our matches I struck so much fear in my opponents they were afraid to guard me.…
