Week Six Tutorial – Emotions & Stress
1. A recent study reported that university instructors are frequently required to engage in emotional labour. Identify three situations in which emotional labour might be required for this job.

Three situation when emotional labour is required for this job are in face-to-face or voice-to-voice contact jobs, roles that require workers to produce an emotional state in others, and in a degree when employees are able to control over staff. For example, University instructor need to show more of their emotion by being pleasure and patient in class. Also, they need to ensure that students feel comfortable with them in making contact by being more heartfelt and friendly in teaching and learning ambience.

2. Two university graduates recently joined the same major newspaper as journalists. Both work long hours and have tight deadlines to complete their stories. They are under constant pressure to scout out new leads and be the first to report new controversies. One journalist is increasingly fatigued and despondent and has taken several days of sick leave. The other is getting the work done and seems to enjoy the challenges. Use your knowledge of stress to explain why these two journalists are reacting differently to their jobs.

The reason why the employee acted in the different way is because the one that getting the work done tend to have better health and lifestyle. Also, know how to remove the presence of stress, and have higher optimism while doing the job. Whereas, the employee that is sick while doing the job is tend to have less personal health, negative self concept, and rely on poor coping strategies, also have high level of workaholic is having more pressure, and did not enjoy the work as much as the other employee.

    My experience with emotional labor is currently being a hospital corpsman in the US Navy. A hospital corpsman in the navy is pretty much a medical assistant in the civilian medical field. I used to work in an orthopedic clinic with all ages of patients. I dealt with screaming infants, young children who didn't listen to their parents, adolescents with attitude problems, and elders who cannot move and need assistance with everything. I had to go to work with a constant smile on my face, regardless how I was feeling, and help people. There was numerous occasions where I had migraines or was sick and had to 'forget' my own feelings to make sure that my patients were feeling comfortable. Emotional labor is needed to make patients feel welcome and to show them that they are receiving the best care possible.
