Oral Book Report: 10% of final grade
Task: Give an oral presentation of 5-10 minutes in length in which you present a novel to the class. Your discussion of the novel must include the following elements:
a short biography of the author
a description of the main characters and setting
a brief description of the main events (without spoiling the novel for other readers!) an analysis of the main theme or themes of the novel
an evaluation of the book overall. What did you like? What did you not like? Would you recommend it?
Be sure to hand in a point-form outline of one page in length maximum containing the essential ideas of your presentation. This will be part of your evaluation.
Books must be fiction and approved by me. Attached is a list of suggested books, all (or almost all) available at the Vanier College Library. You could also ask a reference librarian for a suggestion or spend some time at a bookstore exploring the fiction shelves. Choose a book that you have not read before, that you do not have to read for another course, that has not been made into a film, and which appeals to you. This assignment is supposed to be enjoyable. Start early to avoid stress. Presentation dates will be chosen soon.
Important! The only notes you are allowed to use for your presentation must be put on recipe cards. Do not script your presentation. Put key ideas and information on your cards and speak from memory, using your cards for guidance. Books must be approved by September 24th.
