Muckrakers During The Progressive Era
From the 1890s to the 1920s, many citizens of the United States participated in social activism in order to bring about social and political change. “Muckrakers” played an essential role during this Progressive Era. These journalists had the objective of educating the public about issues and persuading more people to fight for reform, and they did so by exposing society’s flaws through their work. One of the most key muckrakers at the time was journalist and author Upton Sinclair, Jr. He wrote “The Jungle”, a novel about the ills of the meat-packing industry. The publishing of “The Jungle” influenced the Federal Food and Drugs Act of 1906 and the Federal Meat Inspection Act by showing what was actually going on in the factories and how owners …show more content…
He wanted to humanize immigrant workers who were often forced to work under terrible conditions. In the novel, one of the characters, Elzbieta was a worker in a meat-packing factory. According to the narrator, “she was sick and miserable, and often she would barely have strength enough to drag herself home. And there they would eat what they had to eat, and afterward, because there was only their misery to talk of, they would crawl into bed and fall into a stupor and never stir until it was time to get up again, and dress by candlelight, and go back to the machines. They were so numbed that they did not even suffer much from hunger,” (Sinclair). This passage shows how miserable the work was for the American citizens. Long, grueling hours often met with the disease-ridden factory conditions made it incredibly difficult to survive in a healthy manner. Sinclair wrote about the horrible conditions and regulations within the factories. Some of the conditions included old, moldy, white sausage that had been rejected would be dosed with borax and glycerin, and dumped into the hoppers, and made over again for home consumption and the fact that thousands of rats ran and got into the meat, then rats and meat would go into the hoppers together, and many more. Because of the public outcry about this newfound information, Theodore Roosevelt called for the creation of a government system that would ensure sanitary and safe foods. This is when the Federal Food and Drugs Act of 1906 and the Federal Meat Inspection were created. The Federal Food and Drugs Act of 1906 included new laws that would allow food and drugs to be adulterated or misbranded if the correct conditions were not met. This made it so packages would not be allowed to be altered in any way, and must be labeled with the correct ingredients. Also, foods would not be allowed to contain parts of “filthy, decomposed or putrid animal or vegetable substance” (Federal Food and Drugs Act of 1906), and drugs must abide by certain standards of strength and purity.     When thinking of The Jungle by Upton Sinclair, many immediately picture the grotesque meat that was being packaged and sent out to the families all over the state and country. That is because of the paragraph about the meats, where Sinclair writes of the spoiled meat used as sausage; the many chemicals used to change color, flavor, and odor; and removing the bone from bad smoked hams, where a white-hot iron was placed instead. The bad meats were sold under false pretenses, and most of the time it worked. Boneless hams were odds and ends of pork, California hams were shoulders and knuckle joints, and skinned hams were made from old hogs (142). That passage so angered President Roosevelt that he had the Pure Food and Drug Act and the Meat Inspection Act passed, which had harsher laws regarding the meats that could be used. “‘I aimed at the public’s heart,’ said Sinclair, ‘and by accident I hit in the stomach’” (McCage). He said that because he was instead hoping to expose the poor working conditions and hopefully promote socialism.     Muckraking is a period in time in the early 1900’s when investigative journalism became popular and was a form of journalism used primarily to expose issues that would not necessarily be addressed else where. One example of an issue that Muckraking exposed and investigated is issues in the meat packing industry and the way our food and drugs were processed. In response to this, Congress was persuaded to pass reforms such as the Pure Food and Drugs Act (1906) and the Meat Inspection Act (1906) due to the important findings brought up in this investigative journalism. Some documents included in this book show how this new style of journalism helped expose many numerous problems America was facing around the early 1900’s. An example of a document used is “The Shame of Minneapolis” which is an magazine article that deals with urban political corruption that was published for McClure’s Magazine in the January 1903 issue. This document investigated how Minneapolis was full of crooked politicians and police officers who were trying to over throw the city and how one man tried to over throw the corruption.     Charles P. Neill, an economist, and James B. Reynolds, a lawyer, both never previously exposed to the meat slaughtering houses, were assigned by President Roosevelt in hopes of exonerating the meat packing industry and their practices. Unfortunately, their report confirmed Sinclair’s conclusions that conditions were yet horrible and unsanitary in deed. This influenced President Roosevelt to support regulation for the meat packing industry, leading the United States Department of Agriculture to routinely inspect meat packing houses and their procedures. More specifically, the Progressive Movement tried to repair the problems by reformation and cultivation of a better country.
