Learning Organization
Central Michigan University

An organization that lives by the philosophy of effective learning, exhibits the ability to ensure that all employees are learning and utilizing all tools that can help them learn even more. I will go into further detail regarding the characteristics of a learning organization, the most effective organizational theory in my opinion and the potential limitations to my theory.
When it comes to an organization that focuses on effective learning, training is one of the most important aspects to the organizations success. It is imperative to ensure that all employees are receiving the proper amount of training that will enable them to have a better handle on their job. An organization that lacks training can lead to employees not growing or expanding their knowledge. The expansion of individual’s knowledge is critical for the reason that we live in an ever changing world. The training is needed in order to keep a completive advantage. For example, in an organization such as a cell phone company, all employees must be learning on a continuous basis. This is because of the constant changes and needs of consumers. Consumers are constantly looking for new features and new phone capabilities. This means that all employees must be properly trained in order to produce market and sell these products. This starts all the way from the top. Corporate must be trained well enough to know what consumers are looking for, and marketing must be trained well enough to know how to get the product in consumers faces and the retail agents must be trained well enough to share all of the features with potential customers. Effective learning can be compared to a domino effect. The learning process can just come from one force. Management must pass new knowledge down to their subordinates and if the subordinates have valuable information they must relay it to management. This will in return create synergy. Apple is an excellent example

According to Peter Senge (1990) learning organizations are:…organizations where people continually expand their capacity to create the results they truly desire, where new and expansive patterns of thinking are nurtured, where collective aspiration is set free, and where people are continually learning to see the whole together (Smith, 2001). A learning organization is an organization – or a network of organizations – that is continually expanding its capacity to create the outcomes to which it aspires (Darling, 2011). Theories of organizational learning attempt to understand the processes which lead to (or prevent) changes in organizational knowledge, as well as the effects of learning and knowledge on behaviors and organizational outcomes (Schulz, 2001). The concept of an organization that learns is not a new one. It started in the fifties and blossomed in the 1990’s,…

In today’s demanding business world, learning is of critical importance. Successful learning, the application of what has been learnt to the workplace through successful transfer of training and a positive work environment is what measures individual and corporate performance. As employees are chosen to learn, it is usually in the form of structured training (Schimic & Jevremovic 2011). Due to global competitive pressures structured training does not help the employee retain enough knowledge to be useful in the workplace, as mostly the transfer of training fails when the employee is reinserted. This can be due to a variety of factors such as poor trainee characteristics, poor training design and a poor working environment with no support from peers and management (Wilson & O’Connor 2000). However, large learning organisations such as Google have adopted new forms of subordinate training in the form of a twenty percent day in conjunction with successful knowledge management. Other models such as the seventy twenty ten model are also been more widely used by the larger organisations of today. Following the andragogy framework this new form of subordinate training proves advantageous from both a workers and an organisational perspective by increasing the salary of workers whilst in turn improving productivity and profit for the organisation.…
