BSBOHS407A Monitor a safe workplace
Activity One
Answer the following questions:
What is the URL of the website that provides the most information about Occupational Health and safety in Victoria?
OHS at DeakinSafe Work AustraliaWork Safe VictoriaHealth & Safety in the ArtsWhy is it important that all employees have access to Occupational Health and Safety information?
On an average day, somewhere in Australia at least one worker will be killed, 300 will injure their backs, 20 will be diagnosed with hearing loss and maybe a dozen will break bones. Each year, nearly 50,000 South Australians are injured, made sick or die due to their work. With an estimated cost to the economy of $2 billion annually, imagine the benefits for each business, and the State, if we could reduce this number.
Improved OHS training and practice will assist us in reducing this cost and making the workplace safer for everyone. OHS prevent injury and disease to persons in the workplace. Common to all are:
Provision of systems of work that are safe and without risk to health
Prevention of injury and disease
Protection of the general public’s safety and health
Inspectors
Regulations
Enforcement
Probably the most important principle in each Act, from an employment-related perspective, is the ‘duty of care’ which is placed on employers to provide a safe place of work for employees.
c. Why should workplace processes and procedures be continually monitored for OHS factors?

The first act I will be looking at is the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974. This act was put into place to protect employees from exploitation and being over worked. The main features of this act are that employers-who employ more than five employees-must provide a written health and safety policy, take precautions to reduce the possibility of accidents occurring, provide training to enable staff to work safely, provide equipment (if needed) to ensure the health of those working. Employees must comply with health and safety policies in the workplace and report any potential hazards. Also, employees need to be fully informed of their rights and responsibilities and leave nothing to chance.…

It is my intention to amalgamate research material with practical life experiences to provide an overview of the concepts and arguments set forth. With an increase of fatalities in recent years (Safework Australia, 2014), the cost of workplace injuries amounting on average 6% of profit (Woods, 2010), and recent ‘industrial manslaughter’ legislation as several indicators, the need for a well performed, managed and participative OHSMS within any organisation needs to take the highest priority.…

The OSHA organization and website is designed to provide the user with beneficial information regarding workplace safety, regulations for businesses to follow, data and statistics, worker’s rights, how to deal with chemical management, and how to report fatalities or injuries and file a complaint against an employer. The website can be found by using a search engine such as Bing. The URL or website is http://www.osha.gov/ and can be found using a search engine such as Bing by typing in OSHA. The health and safety of workers, family, bystanders, visitors or customers to a business all rely on rules and regulations regarding a healthy and safe work environment. When a problem arises a worker should not feel threatened to report the problem. It is also important to have a location to be able to view information in regards to the latest information related to the handling of chemicals, and use of personal protective equipment.
