Writing Assignment #1

1. The cleaning product I chose to research is Windex, the original glass cleaner. SC Johnson manufactures Windex. To contact SC Johnson, their phone number is 1.800.494.4855, and their address is 1525 Howe Street Racine, WI 53403.
2. Five ingredients in Windex include: Isopropyl Alcohol, 2 –hexoxyethanol, Ammonium Hydroxide, Mirapol Surf S-210, and Videt EGM
3. -Isopropyl Alcohol: Enables the delivery of the product to a surface.
-2 – Hexoxyethanol: Breaks down dirt and deposits. It loosens dirt particles from the surfaces they are attached to, so they can be rinsed away.
-Ammonium Hydroxide: Breaks down dirt and deposits.
-Miraprol Surf S-210: Breaks down dirt and deposits.
-Videt EGM: Breaks down dirt and deposits.
4. - Isopropyl Alcohol is primarily produced by combining water and propene in a hydration reaction. Another way isopropyl alcohol is produced is by hydrogenating acetone. Its main uses include being used as a solvent and as a cleaning agent.
-2 – Hexoxyethanol: 2- Hexoxyethanol is produced by the reaction of ethylene oxide with 1 hexanol. The product is isolated from the reaction mixed by vacuum distillation. Uses for 2 – Hexoxyethanol only pertain to cleaning products.
-Ammonium Hydroxide: Ammonium hydroxide is simply a solution of ammonia in water. Ammonium hydroxide has many other uses other than being used as a cleaning agent. For example, in furniture, ammonium hydroxide is used to stain or color wood. In food production, ammonium hydroxide is used as an acidity regulator. Also, ammonium hydroxide is used in the tobacco industry to provide flavor.
-Miraprol Surf S-210: Miraprol surf S-210 is an aqueous solution of an acrylic base polymer. It uses are only pertained to cleaning agents.
-Videt EGM: Videt EGM is naturally derived polymer. Videt EGM applications include surface and glass cleaners.

    8. Surfactants are wetting agents that lower the surface tension of a liquid, allowing easier spreading, and lower the interfacial tension between two liquids. Surfactants improve water's ability to wet things, spread over surfaces, and seep into dirty clothes fibres. One end of their molecule is attracted to water, while the other end is attracted to dirt and grease. So the surfactant molecules help water to get a hold of grease, break it up, and wash it away. Soaps and detergents are both emulsifying agents and…

Synthesize isopentyl acetate by combining isopentyl alcohol with acetic acid and sulfuric acid and then heating the reaction mixture under reflux for an hour. The alcohol is the limiting reactant, so it should be weighed/ the acids can be measured by volume. The esterification reaction is reversible, and it has an equilibrium constant of approximately 4.2. A pure component can be obtained from a mixture by separating it from all other components of the mixture, using procedures that take advantage of differences in solubility, boiling points, acid-base properties, and other characteristics of the components. Because isopentyl acetate is a liquid, the separation and purification operations will differ from those used previously for solid products. The water that forms during the reaction will be separated from the ester along with the wash liquids. Any traces of water that remain are then removed by a drying agent, either magnesium sulfate or sodium sulfate. Because isopentyl alcohol has a lower boiling point than that of isopentyl acetate, and the by-products have higher boiling points, it should be possible- in principle- to remove the alcohol and by-products from the ester by distillation. Isopentyl alcohol should distill first, followed by the ester, and any by-products should remain behind in the pot-the vessel in which the reaction mixture is boiled.…
