Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama was born Januray 17, 1964 in Chicago, Illinois. Her mother, Marian Robinson, was a full-time homeworker until Michelle entered high school. She grew up along with her older brother, Craig, in a two-story house on Euclid Street in the South Shore of Chicago. The Robinsons entertained themselves by playing Monopoly and by reading. Michelle and Craig both skipped the second grade, and by the sixth grade, she joined a gifted class at Bryn Mawr Elementary School. Michelle attended Chicago's first magnet school, Whitney Young High School, where she was on the honor roll for four years. She was inspired by her brother going to Princeton University, so she followed in his footsteps and graduated in 1985. Michelle Obama went on to earn her Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School in 1988.
