Background and Facts
The cost per patient day was next to the lowest of the seven in area hospitals.
However, the average occupancy had fallen to mid 60’s in the past 18 months; causing a lay off of 134 people, two specialized nursing units, and low morale from trustees. Chief Executive Charlie Jones realizes that these were unfortunate events but has always been backed by the board in his decision-making. Charlie did acknowledge that identifying problems and resolving them in a timely manner with the board has been a long-term issue for him. He states that there was an obvious disconnect between the physicians/medical staff and the board members.

The major problem began when three radiologists purchased a 2-acre site across from the hospital where they were planning on building an ambulatory imaging center. The contract between the radiologists and the hospital does not prevent this however, does state that their full time professional services were to be devoted to the hospital. When the board moved to terminate the contract with the radiologists, the medical staff turned on the board. After a meeting, Charlie Jones was terminated as per board vote.

    Over the last 18 months the average occupancy at Riley Memorial Hospital had fallen. This was certainly a cause for concern for Charlie and the hospital board. As a result, 134 employees were laid off to keep the hospital out of the red. This led to the closing of two specialized nursing units, which had a few trustees and several physicians extremely upset with the board’s decision. Charlie’s relationship with the board and medical staff had changed over time because of his inability to control the number of matters of importance due to a changing external environment. Consequently, Charlie lost his ability to make necessary decisions in a timely manner. With four physicians on the board, Charlie met with resistance when he tried to prepare the board for the economic downturn and the publics decline in the use of physicians and hospitals. Furthermore, Charlie met with resistance once again when he tried to review a proposed contract submitted by a health maintenance organization with the board. Instead of listening to what Charlie had to say, the four physicians persuaded the board to support private practitioners and engage in fee-for-service medicine. The board assured Charlie that the physicians would keep the hospitals needs and interests above those of the medical staff. Charlie appointed Bill Handy as the COO of Riley Memorial Hospital and turned over all internal operations to him. Although this new appointment was fully endorsed by the board, it was never understood or accepted by many of the physicians.     After review the cast study regarding Southern Baptist Hospital (SBH), one can conclude that the extent to which SBH researched the need of its audience prior to developing a marketing strategy was not very far. For example, the case gives us the understanding that the public already had a decent opinion about SBH. As a result, an advertising campaign that focused sorely revamping this position would not increase value or add to the company market share. With that said it is evident that SBH had not completed adequate research or thoroughly considered the audience needs prior to developing its market plan. Moreover, the case suggests that SBH had an overall marketing plan, however the plan in my opinion, was not substantial. On the contrary, such a campaign may be unsuccessful in motivation the audience into purchasing a product or peaking their interested in company services.
