The quote I am talking about with you today was made from a man called Martin Luther King Jr who was the leader for the African-American Civil Rights Movement in America. He is best known for the non violent way he protested, this was based on his Christian beliefs. He is mainly known worldwide for his famous
“I have a dream” speech in Washington. He also won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for taking a nonviolent approach to racial inequality. This specific quote came from a speech he made on April 3rd, 1968 at the Mason Temple in Memphis, Tennessee. This speech mainly concerned the Memphis Sanitation Strike; this began two months earlier
when the sanitation and sewer workers started protesting against dangerous working conditions, poor treatment and discrimination. The reason Martin Luther King Jr made these speeches is because he wanted to fix the inequality between white and black Americans. In this specific time in America, black people weren’t treated as fairly as a
white person was. After a certain incident involving black woman on a bus ( which was when a women named Rosa Parks rejected the bus drivers command to give up her seat for a white man.) Martin felt it was time to protest against racial inequality and start the Civil Rights Movement. These speeches touched a lot of people not just in America
but in the whole world. This quote and the rest of his speeches had a dramatic effect on American civilization. A special civil rights act was created by the government that prohibited racial discrimination in public places, gave equal opportunity for both employment and education for African-Americans and gave the right for black people to vote.
Not everyone liked Martins speeches though, he knew that some white people were making threats against him and even his plane to Memphis was delayed because of a bomb threat. Just a few hours after his speech, King was assassinated. He was just 39 years of age.
