MANUFACTURING ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY

What is manufacturing:
Manufacturing is a Latin word. ‘Manu’ means ‘Hand’ and ‘Facts’ means ‘Made By’.
Manufacturing is defined as:
“Process of converting raw material into the useful products by considering,
1. Design of the product.
2. Selection of the material.
3. Sequence of processes by which it is manufactured”.
Manufacturing Engineering:
“Manufacturing engineering is a discipline of engineering dealing with different manufacturing practices and the research and development of systems, processes, machines, tools and equipment”.
It also defined as,
“Manufacturing engineering includes product design and manufacturing system design as well as operation of the factory”.
It dealing with machines that turn raw materials to a new product. Engineering activities involved in the creation and operation of the technical processes that convert raw materials, energy, and purchased items into components for sale to other manufacturers. In particular, manufacturing engineering involves the analysis and modification of product designs so as to assure manufacturability; the design, selection, specification and optimization of the required equipment, tooling, processes and operations and the determination of other technical matters required to make a given product according to the desired volume, timetable, quality level and other specifications. Manufacturing Engineering has many important branches.

Manufacturing complex activities are,
1. Product design
2. Machinery and tooling
3. Process planning
4. Purchasing
5. Manufacturing
6. Marketing
7. Sales
8. Shipping

The success of any manufacturing company is dependent on its manufacturing system design. The system design concept has been the basic force in manufacturing advancement. Without manufacturing design, all manufacturing would be stuck in the “square wheel” era. The first system design was the invention of the forerunner of the modern factory nearly 200 years ago. New design concepts are continually improving and impacting the worlds manufacturing.…

A manufacturing company typically has departments specializing in purchasing, production, sales, shipping, accounting, finance, and personnel. Production departments and sales departments often are further subdivided along different product lines or geographical areas. Many companies produce multiple products from common raw materials and a shared production process. In such manufacturing processes, two business issues arise. One is how to allocate joint cost among the various types of products manufactured. The second incremental type of decision is whether some types of products should be processed further to create an even more valuable finished good.…

Business has so many things to consider. And one of it is how will you increase efficiency and enhance productivity with fewer errors. Before, the only way to manufacture products is through manual approach wherein there is a possibility of wrongdoings which may lead to business failures. But since advanced technology has been developed, it will be a very big advantage in the field of manufacturing business. It focuses on producing products in its most favorable condition, and at the same time, guaranteeing high quality, low costs, high flexibility and even smaller production quantity. Computer-integrated Manufacturing (CIM) is concerned with the integration of the business, engineering and manufacturing processes of an enterprise. It helps the enterprise to achieve and maintain a competitive edge in the manufacturing marketplace. Over a period of time, factory owners have integrated computer systems in order to control the entire production process. This is done by…
