Management and Leadership: Hewlett Packard
Hewlett Packard (HP) is a technology organization that has been around since 1939. They have one hundred and seventy organizations that operate all over the world (Hewlett Packard, 2010). Hewlett Packard explores how technology and the technology’s services can help organizations and people with their problems and challenges. They offer a wide range of the best technology in the world today. This includes desktops, laptops, hand-held’s, and even more. The company believes in having strong ethics and responsibilities (Hewlett Packard, 2010). They take pride in everything they do and only plan on giving their customers the best technology available. Hewlett Packard’s corporate headquarters is located in Palo Alto, California. Hewlett Packard has to have a strong management and leadership team to better serve the company’s customers with the latest technology (Hewlett Packard, 2010). This analysis will explore the difference in management and leadership, how the roles and responsibilities of the organizational leaders and managers play in creating and maintaining a healthy organizational culture, examine the affect of globalization and management across borders, and two strategies that leaders and management can use to create and maintain a healthy organizational culture.
Management and Leadership
Most people today believe that management and leadership mean the same thing. There are some cases where a manager can be a good leader as well as a manager, but usually that is not the case. The separation between management and leadership comes down to how they motivate the employees. Management are in control because they were put there by an organization (changingminds, 2010). Managers are authority figures, which employees must listen to and follow his or her instructions. The employee does this in order to get paid. The employees answer to the managers and in return the manager listen to his or her boss (changingminds, 2010). Managers are work focused, which means they are paid to get the job done. This could mean with little time and little money, so to ease the stress off them they pass the work on to their employees. Managers often like to avoid conflict and be less risky than others (changingminds, 2010).
Leadership on the other hand is completely different. Leaders don’t automatically have people under them. A good successful leader challenges the process, inspires shared visions, enables others to act, models the way, and encourages the heart. These five behaviors for leaders are combined from two perspectives, what a person wants and what a business needs (Bateman & Snell, 2009). To be able to lead one has to have followers. Leaders do not tell a person what to do, instead they have this appeal to them that automatically make a person want to follow them. Leaders focus on people and have a tendency to take risks (changingminds, 2010). Now there are good managers out there who are also great leaders, but to be able to do this they have to set aside the boss hat and put on his or her charming hat. Hewlett Packard focuses on bringing the best technology to businesses and to people, to do this they cannot just be managers. They have to be leaders as well. Hewlett Packard knows to be able to get the job they have to work together and the managers have to be leaders. This only helps in creating a healthy organizational culture.
Healthy Organizational Culture
Organizational Culture is what an organization believes is right and wrong in the work force and also what gives the feel of the organization. Management and leadership when combined together in an organization have to know everything that goes on in the business and have to have a good relationship between them and the employees.
