A) The prophecies
1) (Oedipus The King) The prophecies of the supernatural are undeserved.
a) “An oracle came to Laius one fine day(I won’t say from Apollo himself but his underlings his priests) and it declared that doom would strike him down by the hands of a son, our son, to be born of our own flesh and blood.” (78489)
● Note that the prophecy never indicates that their son will have the intent to kill his father [Laius] (though the killing [Doom] nonetheless will occur), and that the seems to be no reason for the prophecy other than “one fine day”.
● This prophecy has been foreordained. It will occur despite any mortal efforts.
● Justice is fit for the actions committed. Oedipus now has no choice in committing patricide.
● There seemed no reason for what the prophecy prophecised (it was simply
“one fine day”)
● The fact that Oedipus has not yet committed anything to deserve his fate shows us how the gods’ word (the prophecy) has been unjustly set.
2) (Macbeth) The prophecies of the supernatural are deserved.
a) “All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, thane of Glamis! All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, thane of Cawdor! All hail, Macbeth! Thou shalt be king hereafter!” (1.3.5052)
● Macbeth is killing the rebels (traitors of the kings). He is a great man for defending the throne by killing the rebels, he is also a good fighter (why he is able to fight the rebels) and loyal to the king

In the beginning of Shakespeare’s tragedy Macbeth, the title-character was a noble general of King Duncan of Scotland’s army, greatly respected by all. However, after meeting three witches who prophesied that he would become king, Macbeth, not seeing how that was possible, as Duncan was king, allowed thoughts of murdering the ruler to linger in his mind, until eventually, he carried out the horrible act, with evil persuading from his wife, Lady Macbeth. Although his intent was hidden at first, the consequence of his giving in to the temptation of bettering himself—much like Judas Iscariot’s situation—was later made known.…

Shakespeare’s Macbeth explores the notion of villains through its key characters and throughout the play the audience is left wondering who is actually the ‘real’ villain. Lady Macbeth seems to portray certain characteristics of a villain and appears to have evil intentions and Macbeth is also perceived as a villain due to his violent rampage. Nevertheless, both Macbeth and his wife have a conscience and they realize what they’ve done wrong. With this considered, it is ultimately the witches who are the true villains as they continue to encourage Macbeth on his murderous journey and they are soulless as they have a sense of what is right and wrong, however they find pleasure in disrupting the natural order.…

Macbeth’s previous history must’ve been something to earn himself the immutable respect of so many people, even the King addresses him in exclamation, “O worthiest cousin!” He commands respect where ever he is, and common soldiers know even to pay him the reverence he deserves, “Hail, most worthy Thane” (Ross). All this trust, dedication, and deference shown towards Macbeth indicate clearly that he is a valiant hero of Scotland, and has obviously no desire to throw all his fame away. However, this is indivertibly achieved by one action, one very evil and malicious action. Juxtaposed against the stormy night, Macbeth, under the influence of evil, ambition, his wife’s taunting and a supernatural spell, Macbeth murders the King.…

The opening plaudits of the play present Macbeth as a military hero with references to him as “brave Macbeth”, “Valour’s minion” and “Bellona’s bridegroom”. We are told of his success in war but through the descriptions of his actions on the battlefield, we learn that he is a man well accustomed to bloodshed and slaughter. We wonder should this have been a warning to us from the very beginning that he has no problem with the aspect of killing people? However, we await his personal arrival to assess his moral character. Confronted with witches and their prophecy about his future kingship, Macbeth cannot but be deeply disturbed and excited. He is impatient to hear more from the Witches about the prophecy, “Stay, you imperfect speakers.” We are now aware of Macbeth’s “”vaulting ambition” as he is curious to hear more of what the Witches have to say. This is the first step in his alteration from a state of “human kindness” to that of a “dead butcher”.…
