Video games are basically known as a staple among American teenagers. Many teenage boys and even some girls spend hours of their day staring at the TV screen and rapidly pushing buttons on a controller. Many of the top selling games in America strongly involve violence in their gameplay. These types of games raise many questions about how they affect the people playing the games. Are there negative consequences or are these claims just made up? There is research to back up both claims but the negative effects of violent video games seem to overpower the positives of recreational violent video game play. Manufacturers should enforce their own policy towards people who play their games in a more efficient way. Video games have multiple severe problems associated with the violence that is so heavily incorporated into them. Video games can give a false sense of reality and allow gamers to become so immersed into their game play that lines between real life situations and game play situations begin to blend together. Playing video games can also become an addictive distraction. Many avid gamers can spend hours at a time glued to their TVs playing on their Xboxes, PS3s, and other gaming consoles. This time spent playing games can take away from other activities. Important things like schoolwork and grades can be affected by spending all one’s time playing games instead of focusing on more important things. It can cause people that play the games to go to sleep super late in the night. The students then have to wake up early and go to school tired and will not be able to focus and stay awake to learn the material being taught. Video games also spur a sedimentary lifestyle. Obviously, not getting enough daily exercise leads to weight gain and other health issues. Violent video games also cause behavioral and social problems. These games desensitize people towards killing and steer them in the direction that killing is…

But these games are not the same that our generation used to play. Gone are the days of Pong, Pac-Man, Duck Hunt, Centipede and Galaga. They have been replaced by the more realistic, bloodier and gorier games like, Call of Duty, Killzone 3, Battlefield 3, Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance and the sociopathic Naughty Bear. Yes, I said Naughty Bear. With a name like that, one would expect to find that it would be a game rated for a 4 or 5 year old. It was rated to for teens by the Entertainment Software Ratings…

One out of the many people that disagrees with this argument is Melissa Henson from the Parent Television Council. From Henson’s point of view, she believes that video games make teenagers more violent than they are already are. As she quoted, “Prolonged exposure to violent images, such as violent video games, can result from in more aggressive behavior.” What she is saying is that violent video games should be banned then rather being played by teens since they have way too much violent and gory images which make them violent…

The video games phenomenon is somewhat new in this modern society. Although they often to be entertaining, the contents have become more violent and disturbing as computing technology has become much more advanced. These days, the popularity of violent video games has caused an increase in controversy. Parents and experts feel that some games are just too violent and they think that the violent will spill over into the real world. However, I strongly believe violent video games do not cause an increase in aggression in adolescents. In fact in many ways violent video games benefit the children that are playing them.…

“If video games do increase violent tendencies outside the laboratory, the explosion of gaming over the past decade from 3.2 billion in sales in 1995 to $7 billion in 2003, according to industry figures, would suggest a parallel trend in youth violence. Instead, youth violence has been decreasing.” (Hoerrner 49). A video game is a game played by electronically manipulating images produced by a computer program on a television screen or display. Violence is behavior involving physical force intended to hurt, damage, or kill someone or something. Some video games have violent and mature content in them. People claim that the violence in video games can cause aggression in people. Others claim that the violence in video games has nothing to do with aggression in people. It is also argued that violence in video games has nothing to do with the rage already existing inside of people. Video games do not cause violence because gamers understand that video games are not real, that video games release daily frustration and are inspiring.…

There are so many things out there in today’s world that you would think would contribute to violence in our youth. There are violent television shows that depict characters as anti-heroes, books that depict killing as a way to save the planet or country or something of that nature. While all of those may have a contribution to our violent youth, they don’t measure up to what violent video games do in terms of causing violence in our youth. Violent video games can make teens more aggressive because of intense graphics, lack of censorship, and purpose of the game.…

Most believe that video games do not promote violence in people. They don’t know how it doesn’t register in peoples mind that you are your own controller. When children play video games they get mad and become angry when they lose, but the doesn’t get them so mad to want to commit a violent crime. Sure they have theories, but have they proven anything. Violent behaviors are done by you and you only. Did the video game make you go and commit a crime. According to David Bickham, a staff scientist at Center on Media and Child Health and Children’s Hospital in Boston, “However, there is a widely held misconception that unless children immediately imitate the violence they experience in a video game, they are unaffected by it.” Although some video games feature violent content, that does not mean that they incite violent behavior.…

It is the sole responsibility of parents to control what types of games their children play. If parents want to allow their children to play violent games it is their decision to make. Parents should ensure that their children know the difference between video games and real life. Many people believe that violent video games are a major cause of violent crimes. Several states introduced laws restricting violent video games which were then over turned in federal court. That suggests that the violence in video games doesn’t cause aggression.…

In Skinner’s argument, “Stop Pointing the Finger at Violent Video Games,” the point he is trying to convey is that crime has gone down since 1975 when they did not have video games. Therefore, video games cannot be the blame for kids and teens acting more violently if studies show crime has gone down. Skinner disagrees with critics who say video games make people violent because he plays video games and done not act violent. Jordan Skinner’s argument is valid because I myself play violent video games, as do many of my friends, and none of us have violent behavior.…

In 1999, Dave Grossman and Gloria DeGaetano, co-authors of Stop Teaching Our Kids to Kill: A Call to Action against TV, Movie & Video Game Violence stated that video games cause players to associate happiness and fulfillment with causing physical pain in others[ii]. However, significant study of the matter shows that gaming does not increase juvenile crime. The number of minors arrested for juvenile murder has decreased 71.9% between 1995 and 2008[iii], just as the number of juvenile arrests in total has fallen by 49.3%. [iv]In the same time frame, video game sales have more than quadrupled. Several studies that would show otherwise use unreliable means of study, such as noise blast tests and there is a considerable lack of studies that monitor children and teens over extended periods of time.[v]…

Most video games with violence have an aggressive impact on teenagers. Other media entertainment causes teens and children to imitate their action. Evidence also suggests that long term players and watchers imitate these violent urges more often than usual. I truly urge parent to avoid buying their children and teenagers games with violence and criminal acts and watching television with shootings and crime scenes. They have become emotional detached with interacting socially as well as intellectually in the world. This has definitely corrupt their mines emotional and mentally.…

A pair of parents in Reno, Nevada, is being put away behind bars after neglecting to feed their two young children because their attention was being consumed by video games instead (Lee and Finley 2). People have raised the question of the appropriateness of video games and how psychologically influential they are on a child’s mind. The effects of video games manifest themselves in a variety of ways, including psychologically, emotionally, and socially. Psychologists and scientists have done many studies that have linked violence back to video games. They have also uncovered what is in video games that makes the player so attached to the television screen and why they are so influential. Certain violent video games in the past have been found to be the cause of violence in the world. Although it is argued that violent video games have no negative effect on children, research has proved that violent video games do in fact cause children to be more aggressive and violent.…
