Language Barriers In Health Care
Ethnicity could play an extremely role in the health care sector. The growing number of migrant patients and foreign speaking staff could bring many communication errors between a healthcare practitioner and patient.
The patient in this case study is a 12- years old Latino boy, Called Ramon who speaks little English; He had limited proficiency in English; his mother spoke no English at all and no medical interpreter was available, so Ramon acted as his own interpreter while his mother described his symptoms, but the Doctor understands little of it, so he turned to Ramon for clarification but he misinterpreted. The patient has Nausea and/or vomiting.
Further, the patient has developed symptoms of diabetes type 1.

Further, the medical doctors should be open to providing the patients with alternative solutions such as electronic devices such as mobile translators. It should be noted that the healthcare provider and the patient have mutual interests and as such both can contribute to overcoming language barriers. For instance familiarizing oneself with the medical terms has to be an integral part of interpreter requirements. In addition, both the patient and healthcare provider have to be comfortable with the provided interpretation services in the healthcare center (Luxford, 2011). Moreover, time is of the essence and critical consideration in enhancing smooth communication in a healthcare setting where language barriers present serious problems.
