Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia are substantially over-represented in the criminal justice system. This is caused by an interplay of complex historical and contemporary factors including dispossession of land, structural disadvantage, systemic racism, intergenerational poverty and trauma, over-policing, substance misuse and mental illness, tough-on-crime policies and the chronic under-funding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander legal and interpreter services.…
About 17,500 Canadians committed suicide during the years of 2007 to 2011, with 75% of these people being Aboriginal. Furthermore, 4.2% of Aboriginal death comes from suicide. Why are these numbers so high? Why are Aboriginals committing suicide? Suicide among Aboriginals is primarily a result of hopelessness and loss of identity. The past of the Aboriginals dictates to them that they have no self-worth, and this results in them committing suicide. The history of Aboriginals in residential school, reserves, and education are the causes of hopelessness and loss of identity, which causes them to commit suicide.…
This essay will discuss the topics of youth suicide, binge drinking and deviant behaviour amongst Australian teenagers. It will show why Australian teenagers involve themselves in such behaviour and analyse the reasons by using sociological theories. It will also give a Christian perspective to these behaviours and show why such trends are occurring.…
In Michael Krahl’s “The Weight on Our Shoulders Is Too Much, and We Are Falling”: Suicide among Inuit Male Youth in Nunavut, Canada he discusses the major impact of mental illness on the youth of the Inuit society. In “Incorporating the prosthetic: Traumatic, limb-loss, rehabilitation and refigured military bodies” Seth Messinger discusses the importance of mental stability when dealing with the limb loss of veterans. In both of these articles, the common claim I will be making is, despite its vitality, clinicians must stop ignoring the mental stability of patients enduring major life crises in order to allow them to better assimilate within society. In both of these articles, the strong sense of untreated mental instability…
Colonialism and oppression have acted as a tool in allowing First Nation youth to succumb to the social cycle of cultural shock “Certainly the agenda of aggressive assimilation through the residential schools has left a large, dark legacy and certainly we, as First Nations people, are trying to move forward from that” (Moore, D., Native school conditions, para. 27). Aboriginal youth may need to leave reserves to attend post-secondary education, but tend to be overcome with differences outside of the reserves. There are not enough social supports to aid in the adaptability that many youth are faced with. This leaves them lacking in the ability to be successful in their education, therefore returning to what they know to their cultural atmosphere. Colonialism has left an impact on many generations of Aboriginal peoples, for any persons that experienced it and survived, they were traumatized and left with long lasting effects that have been passed down to their children and grandchildren “In 1967, there were only 200 Aboriginal students enrolled in Canadian Universities out of a total Aboriginal student population of about 60,000” (McCue, H., Aboriginal people: Education, para. 17). Those that experienced residential schools have…
Early childhood development is one the most important social determinants of health. Not only does this social determinant maintain a person’s health while they’re young but it also creates a stepping stone for their health as they grow into men and women (Shonkoff, Boyce & McEwan, 2009). Burchill and Higgins (2005) state that a number of problems within the youth of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander are still desperately seeking attention. From 1991 to 2010 youth suicide has increased from a low ten percent to eighty percent and has increased in the following years. To add, the juvenile detention rates are twenty-four times higher than non-Indigenous Australians and only twenty-five percent of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children complete school compared to a fifty-two percent rate in non-Indigenous Australians. These statistics show evidence that whilst improving in other factors Closing the Gap isn’t meeting the needs of early childhood development and the negative impact it has on the social and emotional wellbeing of young Indigenous Australians. This can lead to the misuse of health services in Indigenous communities (Burchill et al, 2005).…

Indigenous populations in Canada (First Nations, Inuit and Métis) experience a disproportionate burden of youth suicide in comparison to the general population (Kirmayer et al., 2007; MacNeil, 2008). Incidence rates of suicide among Indigenous are estimated to be as high as seven times that of non-Indigenous youth and, currently, suicide and self-inflicted injuries are the leading cause of death among Indigenous youth aged 10-19 (Health Canada, 2013). Despite this, rates of suicide among Indigenous youth vary greatly in relation to geographical location across Canada (Chandler & Lalonde, 1998). In terms of gender breakdown, existing epidemiological data demonstrates that male Indigenous youth are at greater risk for completed suicide, whereas female Indigenous youth are at greater risk for attempted suicide (Health Canada, 2013).…
Genocide, the deliberate and systematic extermination of a national, racial, political, or cultural group (Dictionary). This is a topic that is discussed many times in class as it was often the main goal settlers of North America were trying to accomplish. There were many methods of genocide white settlers committed, one in particular was boarding schools. Richard Henry Pratt viewed the Natives as people, and had good intentions for them. Although he may have had good intentions they weren’t always perceived that way. “Kill the Indian, save the man,” that was what he did by admitting the native children into boarding schools. Many things that occurred in these boarding schools would be considered acts of genocide that left significant damage…
While suicide disproportionally affects young adults, approximately 80 percent of suicides now occur in the 25 years and over age group (Beautrais et al 2005). Those who live in the most deprived areas of New Zealand have higher rates of suicide and hospitalisation for suicide attempts than those living in the least deprived areas. There are also gender disparities, with more males dying by suicide than females, yet more females are hospitalised for suicide attempts than males (Ministry of Health in press).…
A social issue that is prominent in Canada is suicide, it is ranked 4th in results of death it is not limited by age or gender nor race but its reasons vary from person to person. It was only months ago when a short lived coverage of the attawapiskat community dealing with an outbreak of suicides and suicide attempts, when a new statistics Canada came out stating that 1 in five aboriginals have suicidal thoughts hearing this type of statics and news is truly disturbing and heartbreaking. This problem falls under structural functionalism because the definition is a theory that sees society as an organic system , each institution in society has a specific job to do. Knowing this we can see that an individual role in society can have a factor in their decision of committing suicide , one can say the first nations of Canada are tired of their “role in society’ whilst making such decision is extremely personal the knowledge of their conditions it's likely one of the reasons would come from their…
In North America, we are dependant on the idea of the American Dream; good jobs to pay for all our wants and needs. But when our ability to pay for our desires is threatened, some may turn to suicide as an escape from issues we cannot face. In recent years, suicide in North America has been on the rise, with all walks of life affected. From newly unemployed men and women killing themselves after the economic crash of 2008, to young girls killing themselves as a result of being publicly shamed on the internet, it is my belief that while death is not celebrated or encouraged it can be an alternative to failure in North America. Soceity discourages people killing themselves yet to some it is the best option. Suicide, act of one ending their own…
From the year 2000-2006 the rate of suicide has gradually increased both in the 10-24 years and 25-64 years old age group…
Canada's Mental Health Association shared the fact that in Canada, suicide in individuals in one of the leading cause of death in both sexes in the teenage to middle age years. This isn't a fact that we should be seeing, suicide is something that shouldn't be happening. Mental health disorders have been growing on many of us and it's as if dealing with these issues is starting to become a norm in the life of a teenager. It's unfortunate to see that many of us have fallen into the hard area's of life and have a hard time getting back into the safe zones. Mental health disorders is a growing issue in teenagers, I believe it's time we spoke more about it so that we can help us teenagers feel more comfortable with seeking help so that a lot of us can set a path into a more healthier…
