PROMPT: “I felt expelled and exiled”

I felt expelled and exiled as they just left me there on the footpath in the chilling darkness of a Saturday night. “Get out of the car; we don’t want to be seen with you!” I can still hear those spiteful words playing over and over again in the back of my mind as I continue walking along the footpath of this unfamiliar suburb. I am completely alone with only my thoughts and the echo of my footsteps in the empty street. Upon hearing a faint resonance of a jingle, I look up again. I jump back as a black cat shoots across the path in front of me. I caught a glimpse of its dishevelled fur. It disappears, providing a screeching hiss that pierces the night air as it encounters a mammal in the undergrowth. They say a black cat at night is bad luck, but I honestly doubt my luck could have gotten any worse in light of recent events. It’s funny that the people you have loved and grown up with for almost your entire schooling journey can turn on you so effortlessly.

My adolescent legs strain as I continue along the path aimlessly and my stomach rumbles in emptiness as I realise, I left without food. How can one think of such things at a time like that? I most certainly didn't. Just minutes before leaving for an awesome party one doesn’t remember to do a lot of things and now the only thing dwelling in my gut is the sore pain that was the increasing hate for the cruel beings that have abandoned me here. Lost in my thoughts, my melancholic walking pattern is disrupted as my foot catches on a thick branch in the deceptive darkness and I fall swiftly face first into a small jagged rock. Dazed, I lift myself up from the ground and dust myself off. My left eyelid closes automatically as blood rolls down the top of my face. Cursing, I wipe my face with my white sleeve, soaking the cotton a blackish red instantly. The shock disperses and pain sets in, sharp agony mixed with a strange tingling sensation on my forehead.

A slight breeze blew throughout the dandy forest, swaying the stiff lifeless trees and blowing the black stained leaves across my bare white feet. As I stumbled across the dead landscape, a slight fog swam around blending in with the increasingly falling snow. Hundreds of dark wood surrounding me seemed to slowly cave in, creating a narrow cave-like passage. An eerie feeling swept over me, and I stopped completely, analysing every detail around me. The smog became thicker, blinding the scenery and almost completely covering my vision. I sensed an inhuman presence watching me, and flinched whenever a snapping sound came from a faraway distance. I slowly turned around and began pacing in the direction I came from. The fog smothered me but I kept running,…

“I can’t believe I’m doing this” I mutter into my wooly scarf. It’s 4 o’clock in the afternoon and the weather reads ten degrees Fahrenheit. I shift my weight and try to get into a more comfortable squatting position as the rocks dig into my boots. I look around; it’s a rather dreary day with no clouds in sight. I scribble in a notepad. Five minutes in and my hands are numb.…

A swirl of heat engulfed the outline of my body, its elongated fingers clawed at the edges of my jaw line. Their torturing grips strangled me through the airport security doors. The smell of oil and putrid stench of armpit wafted around my nostrils. Its odour gradually deprived me of rationality and soon dizziness overcame me. Before I knew it, I stood in front of a taxi, outside the airport and already heading towards a thin Vietnamese driver. His bony elbow protruded from beneath a thin brown layer of skin, its leathery texture coated with blistering sweat sparkled underneath the unmerciful sun as he leant against his cab. We exchanged glances and spoke in native tongues. As he spoke his skeletal fingers flick the sweat soaked hair from his eyes. Pointed towards the trunk and flung my Prada luggage beneath the hood.…

I slip into the opposite room, immersed in darkness, and observe the scene, watching as you thrash and jerk your body, trying to resist the overbearing force of arms which hold you down. But you crumble, collapsing onto the cold floor, in a dishevelled heap. You wrap your frail…

Standing up with two fingers dragging on the arm of the recliner, I carefully move toward the kitchen. One step from my chair, I stab in the dark with my other hand searching for the back of the couch. This was pretty common practice after a late night of watching TV, but this time was different. I could no longer see the flashing 12:00 from the microwave. The coffee maker on the end of the counter was not there. My eyes never adjusted to see the hue of the streetlight coming in the window. I was like a ship with no light house. There was nothing to mark my way or to judge distance by. I tried to estimate the number of steps that it might be to reach the doorway to my bedroom. It had to be at least eight. About halfway through step six this theory was shot out the window as my outstretched hand rammed into the door facing. Three more step and I should reach the corner bedpost and have the security of my bed to finish this trial. As I stepped through the doorway I was leaning forward with my right hand about waste level waving side to side in search of the big wooden knob of the bedpost. The next step would be one that I dearly regretted. In the visual image painted in my mind I did not realize that the dresser protruded so far into the center of the room. My left pinky toe made a popping noise as the pain reverberated…

The howling of the wind brought my eyes to open. Where was I? Focusing in the dark of night, confusion washed over me as I came to realize I was in the desert. Distant landscapes of dry and worn rock surrounded me, and beneath my bare feet I felt the gritty sand caught between my toes. I was surrounded by those rocky hills and yet as I scanned the desolate desert it seemed never ending. The irony of the nighttime desert suddenly set into my body; that ghastly wind moving right through me and chilling my bones to that of splintering ice. The need to move started me forward though, and I felt a sharp ache all over, my body trying to fight against change. Was I lost? My heart began pounding fast in my chest, the blood pumping through my veins felt like an icy river. So slow, but I trudged onwards, hope holding onto a possible lie. It was when my pace held steady that a sudden wariness alerted me to foreign noises. Soft hissing sailed through the air waves, accompanied by a more mechanic static… What was that? It slid right into my mind and took me in a hold. I halted, my feet sinking into the sand. An uneasy paranoia gripped my chest as the noises mirrored me, pausing just as I did. Sickness rose like bile in my throat, I could feel eyes upon me… somewhere. I began to move again, desperate to leave this place now. Stubbornly, I stared towards the endlessness of the chilly desert, refusing to look back. I dared not to look back. A strong gale came, making my hair flail out behind me and the tiniest of noises began to spiral around my head with unseen stealth. The static came back, but mingled within it was a wicked giggling. I looked around uneasily, head turning to look and search all around me. Where was it coming from? All I saw was those silent, unmoving rocky hills…The giggling continued to move all around me, fading in and out of hearing range, corrupting me to an edginess that brought on an unwanted burst of adrenalin. Burning tears began to well up in my eyes,…

Leaves fall on the floor and the clouds circle around the sky. The clouds sway in the breeze with the wind. A street circles around the city and a little building sits in the middle. The building, also known as the art center, houses many art pieces and tools. The door leads to a long hallway, a few doors, and finally a huge, open space. Brown tables are spaced out evenly, with white chairs placed on each side. The room is split among many artists. The artists include the painters, sculptures, and many more.…

Although I am extremely happy about where I stand today, I’ve started to get this uneasy feeling, is it because I haven’t been feeling well or is it because I’ve started to dream more about those back at my home town.…

Already the irritating fly that eluded my swatting earlier takes its vengeful residence amidst the rapidly-mounting pool of blood in which I lie; a sea of deepening red that this morning flowed warm and sustaining through my veins. Yet I do not shoo the fly away. My lifeless body is numb and unresponsive in spite of my active mind that buzzes with replays of the horror of this day, of flashbacks to the days that preceded it, and of visions of the days that would go on without me.…

When I got home I was surprised to see that the world hadn’t shifted under my stomping feet and, in fact, that it was not even morning yet. Eager to escape the eerie calm of my living room as fast as I’d arrived, I darted outside for an adventure. Pumpkin guts disgraced the road in all directions. The air smelled like scorched leaves and an ancient diesel truck. I felt wickedly insignificant, standing there with a piece of chalk I’d somehow acquired, ready to defile an infinitely…

It was a long way, and I could see people everywhere staring at us. I didn’t know where we were heading to, but what I knew for sure was that my heart was beating frantically in my ears, becoming louder with my every step. All of sudden, my father took a turn, and we were then walking through a narrow pathway. The path was as old as the Nile; so dark, so filthy. It seemed to me as if nobody even cared to take a look at it, not even the rays of the sun. I was wondering why my dad was making me walk through this terrible way, but didn’t dare ask him. So, I moved on silently, until I saw something that didn’t let me move any further.…

Every day the sun circles around my little apartment as each sleepless night leaves its memories in my mind, as I fear of that fateful cold day in an alley. It was winter of 87...on a Sunday I was walking through market when I “accidentally” bumped into a bread cart and RAN.The chase was on. I bumped into some kid along the way and fell on the floor I cursed, as the bread lay there on the cold gravelly floor I looked at the kid around the same age as me but I felt a weird connection as if fate was showing me light... but I didn't have time for this; my legs were killing me running at full speed for so long. I ran into the closest alley way,TRAPPED dang I should have seen that coming all alleys are blocked on Sundays(no shipments)so I was trapped, taking the kicks of those punk police officers then outta nowhere Baylee Fitzgerren the guy I bumped into earlier is now saving my life kinda, you can tell his eyes were blazing with the flame of hope I got up from the floor and stared at him with my cold brown eyes, my crimson red hair flowed in the wind.My rutty face stained with blood I blanked out. I woke up in a strange place everything was clean my head hurt I reach to feel my head something strange was there something soft that covered my wound. I took a look in the mirror it was white and at the back I saw the color red I knocked out again and woke up with Baylee at my bed side I was shocked at what I saw him sleeping I could tell he was waiting for me to wake up.As I was sitting in bed Baylee’s mother was walking past and she smiled it was a warm embrace I had never felt before being alone on the street and all I've never had such embrace before I woke Baylee up he as surprised as ever,we laughed. Baylee asked for my name I didn't respond, he smiled and said “alright then Leo,Leo Scarlet will be your name.” Through the years me and Baylee grew closer as friends.…
