Meaning To You.”
Deep in the tepid gloom of late October I was gyrating, hip thrusting, and all manner of other obscene gestures to songs with the lyrical genius of a whale song. The fourth floor was sticky with evaporated sweat and I, for once, just didn’t give a fuck. Just me and a friend jamming because it seemed like it was the Right Thing to Do.
When I got home I was surprised to see that the world hadn’t shifted under my stomping feet and, in fact, that it was not even morning yet. Eager to escape the eerie calm of my living room as fast as I’d arrived, I darted outside for an adventure. Pumpkin guts disgraced the road in all directions. Peter slammed his office door and ruptured another splinter on its face like the thousands that plagued it. His shaky hands fixed three locks across the door that jarred into their familiar cradles. He dragged his chair through the cracked grooves in the floorboards and collapsed into it with a sigh. The paperwork on his desk was minimal. It was the nightmare garden he tended to every night once the children were dreaming, and his wife curled against her own skin, embraced by icy cotton sheets. They swished their blue-scaled tails pail as the summer sky and started to sing, voices harsh and smooth, like waves of pebbles and sway and I stopped worrying about what they were. In fact, I wasn’t thinking about anything at all, except how to keep time with their hypnotic chants. I sway like a ship at sea, slow dancing in a daze until the music…

Modest Mouse is an indie-style alternative rock band that had its origin in the 90’s, and has since been making music with big labeling companies. Most of their music has been hailed by fanatics and critics as sincere and thoughtful art that portrays the pessimistic nihilism seen in most of today’s society. The vocalist/lead guitarist for Modest Mouse, Isaac Brock, usually prefers to uphold his lyrics on the darker, rebellious side of the creative spectrum. There are many examples that one could use to elaborate underlying themes, but there are two of the popular indie-rock band’s works that ramify into multiple existential messages, “Bukowski” and “Float On”, with most of Modest Mouse’s themes reappearing in…

A slight breeze blew throughout the dandy forest, swaying the stiff lifeless trees and blowing the black stained leaves across my bare white feet. As I stumbled across the dead landscape, a slight fog swam around blending in with the increasingly falling snow. Hundreds of dark wood surrounding me seemed to slowly cave in, creating a narrow cave-like passage. An eerie feeling swept over me, and I stopped completely, analysing every detail around me. The smog became thicker, blinding the scenery and almost completely covering my vision. I sensed an inhuman presence watching me, and flinched whenever a snapping sound came from a faraway distance. I slowly turned around and began pacing in the direction I came from. The fog smothered me but I kept running,…

It was a windy, and chilly day in Newberry. The small old town that it was. The air frigid, and the trees bare as though a human is stripped down to its bare bones. The town was desolate except for supper time. The flags on the street would dance back and forth. Some stuck in the iced air. The light poles on the side of the streets would never light. Due to the shattered light bulbs that rarely glowed. For people would drive miles to go to Luke’s. It was basically the only thing open in Newberry. It was a rare diner that it was. It served coffee and donuts all day, and was open all the time. That was unique for Newberry. The town historic yet haloed. The smell of dust, linens, and must lingered in the streets. But the town was desolate, not…

It seemed like I was wandering into a different dimension. My senses were becoming acquainted to new feelings: guttural whispers, excruciating odour, ponderous glass-like air and the cemented, pungent, taste of death! As I opened the door candlelight rose to greet me but who lit them? I was informed that the secluded house I was purchasing has been unoccupied forever.…

TODAY WAS NOT a normal day for walking home. The clouds that shined over the town made me slightly put off by the idea of Santa Rosa for a corn dog. Not like they had good corn dogs, but I was hungry and carried a heavy pocket full of sunshine. I guess I was meant to stop at a random road today, because as I stood staring up at the clouds (and finally knowing what Louis was doing all that time when she was daydreaming), I wasn't the only one who ditched school. There was another figure that came from the same direction that I had come from, stomping her way down the street and holding a look that was deadly, carrying a knapsack too big for her arms.…

    Spawn of the Beats

The Beat generation of the mid twentieth century produced a culture that had a lasting effect on generations to come. In the decades following the 1950s, the Beats successors, or ‘spawn’, ranged from authors to musicians. These artists were greatly influenced by the Beat’s writings and performances, as well as by spending time with the very Beats themselves. Bob Dylan, a spawn, credited much of his early work to his readings of the Beats and his relationship with Allen Ginsberg. From his appearance, to his very poetic lyrics, Dylan appears to be just like any of the other Beats. However, what separated Dylan was his concern for those suffering around him. Ultimately, although Bob Dylan was very similar to the Beats, it was his passionate, socially conscious lyrics distinguished him.…

“You’ve got to listen to the heavens, you got to try to understand. The greatness of their movement is just as small as it is grand.” Most young adults of my generation do not know who The Grateful Dead are, but they unknowingly dawn the apparels and slang created in the counterculture of the bands following the Deadheads. The band, The Grateful Dead, became popular in the 60s and carried out wide spread recognition and fame into the 80s. Their calming, peace-promoting music became popular because it ‘transported’ people, it took them away from whatever they were going through in their life and set them on a new path. Fans of the band described the feeling of being at a Grateful Dead concert as being high even without drugs. This is what sparked many fans to follow the band around on tour, stopping at every venue to enjoy the experience of a Grateful Dead show. However, the influence of the dead spread way beyond the walls of the concert. The music of the Grateful Dead inspired a completely new counterculture, which stretched beyond the concerts and the albums, and affected people outside of the band’s fan base.…

    Pumpkin Patch

As a child I was psyched up, I couldn’t wait to look at all the pumpkins and carve it as a dinosaur. I literally was obsessed with dinosaurs until the age of nine. We parked our 1997 Corolla and started to walk to all the bright orange pumpkins. Something was strange from the looks of this place. All the pumpkins had white little tags on them but they weren’t dollar signs like you would expect. They all had words on them, I was only six at the time so I couldn’t read that much. A few words I read out loud from one of the white little tags but struggled to read the whole sentence. My mom was confused too, why would all the pumpkins have stupid little quotes on them she murmured. We soon found out shortly that this was at our advantage and not a disappointment. A tall black man with dreads came out of the trailer by the pumpkin patch and walked up to us. He asked “What can I help you with folks?” My mother asked him about the pumpkins and the quotes on them. He laughed, since it’s three days before Halloween were having a little contest. I looked up at him and…

I was so tired, even attempting to keep my eyes open was a struggle. My whole body was achy after a hard day’s of school work, constantly staring at a computer screen and typing away, just to finish an essay. My pale white hands, frozen by the air conditioning blasting on high, were holding on to the steering wheel like a person gripping the edge of a cliff, hoping not to fall into a dark abyss. My brain wanted to give in, to remain in the sleep that I kept dangerously drifting in and out of. I took a look outside, the road looking meek. The rows if brush hoars any objects spattered off the road by vehicles in the August sun. It felt like I was going around in a circle, my tires skating around the bends and turns of the road. I felt maybe I should slow down so I do not lose…

Despite the uncomfortable positions people were put in, you could still feel the excitement and bliss leaving the crowd like smoke. The adrenaline surpassed expectations throughout the show, there was so much movement, from people jumping and dancing, to fists in the air so tight you could see their white knuckles a mile away. For a moment, the lead singer told the crowd how not many would know a song they were about to play, since it was before they became well known, and obviously, I knew it. As they began the introduction of the song, some of the crowd grew calm and quiet, while those who knew the song kept the same up-beat mood present throughout the rest of the…

The beat generation was one of the largest cultural movements of the twentieth century. What started off as a literary phenomenon quickly progressed into a life-changing attitude for thousands of people across the country. The movement embraced originality and individuality in the way that people thought and acted. The generation’s writers coined the term “beat” to describe the type of generation in which they were living in. However, this is not to say that they did not see the world around them as beautiful. Though they were extremely aware of the corruption in society, they were also able to detach themselves from it to see the beauty of individuality and creativity. The movement of the beat generation disposed of old rules of literature, music, sex and religion, and its effects are still prevalent today.…
